Junior forward earns second straight all-region nod
After leading the team in scoring and assists during the 2021 spring season, junior forward Tani Oluwaseyi has been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team, it was announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Oluwaseyi, who also found a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team, received his accolade after leading the Red Storm with five goals and three assists, both team highs, in just nine appearances during the abbreviated 2021 campaign. He finished third in the BIG EAST in both goals per game (0.56) and points per game (1.44). Four of Oluwaseyi's goals were game winners, as the Red Storm went 4-0-0 in contests that featured an Oluwaseyi marker.Â
Â
His best performance of the season came in a 4-2 victory over Stony Brook on Feb. 23, as the Mississauga, Ont., native scored twice and assisted on a third goal.Â
Â
As a sophomore in the fall of 2019, Oluwaseyi became the first Johnnie since Medufia Kulega during the national championship season of 1996 to be named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. He scored 11 goals and assisted on five others, becoming the first St. John's player since Simone Salinno during the College Cup campaign of 2003 to register double-digit goals. Oluwaseyi helped guide the Red Storm to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the first time since 2008. The Johnnies rose as high as no. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll that season.
Â
As a sophomore, Oluwaseyi was also honored with a place on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Team.
Â
With only three seasons under his belt, Oluwaseyi's 20 career goals are just two shy of cracking the Red Storm's career top-10 list in that category.Â
Â
This spring, Oluwaseyi became the 17th player in program to be named to the All-BIG EAST First Team twice, but just the third to accomplish the feat by the end of his junior season, joining Matt Groenwald and Huey Ferguson.
