Red Storm, Seawolves set to meet Tuesday afternoon for the second time in two weeks
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team welcomes Stony Brook to Queens on Tuesday afternoon for what marks the final home contest of 2021 for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm (10-19, 7-14 BIG EAST) and Seawolves (23-12, 7-4 America East) will match up for the second time in the last two weeks after Stony Brook took the first meeting, 2-0, at their home field on April 20. Tuesday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN3 and live stats will also be available.
St. John's comes into the battle with Stony Brook riding the high of a Sunday victory over Connecticut, 6-2, to close out its BIG EAST slate. Gabriella Conca and Gretchen Bowie each smacked home runs in the game while Kayla Kmett earned the victory in the circle. The win snapped a six-game skid for the Red Storm.
St. John's trio of graduate students, Bowie, Kaitlin Mattera and Marissa Rizzi, have saved some of their best softball for the end of their careers in Queens. Each comes into Tuesday's contest riding season-best six game hitting streaks which date back to the beginning of the team's series with Villanova.
Bowie has hit five home runs this season and ranks tenth in the conference with a .361 batting average on the year which is good enough for second on the team. The Red Storm third baseman is just two games shy and seven hits away from the 200 number. Should Bowie knock in three runs over the team's final three games, she will become the program record-holder for RBIs in a career with 144.
As for Mattera, she has been on a tear lately, hitting .472 (17-36) with three home runs over her last ten games. The Red Storm catcher was honored in two of the last three weeks by the BIG EAST for her performance, once earning a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll while also being named the BIG EAST Player of the Week.
Rizzi has been steady all season for the Red Storm, leading the team with a .423 batting average, a position she has been familiar with all season long. The Red Storm first baseman ranks second in the BIG EAST in on base percentage and slugging percentage this season as well, while sitting atop the conference with 11 doubles on the year.
Tuesday's contest with the Seawolves will mark the final home game for that graduate trio, as well as for Conca, Kalei Sorensen, Elyse Morris, Amelia Ditolvo and Kmett, who will all be graduating from St. John's later on this month.
As for Stony Brook, they will be looking to rebound following a sweep at the hands of Albany this weekend in an America East three-game showdown. The Seawolves boast one of the top pitching staffs in the nation, as they come in with a 1.93 ERA as a staff which ranks in the top-20 in the country. Stony Brook's staff is led by Dawn Bodrug, who has 186 strikeouts on the season to rank 13th overall among NCAA pitchers.
The Johnnies have taken seven of the 11 all-time meetings between the two teams but have dropped the last two meetings between the two teams. Last time out against Stony Brook, the Red Storm mustered just one hit off the bat of Natalie Alheidt in what was a 2-0 complete game shutout victory for Melissa Rahrich.
Following the matchup with Stony Brook, the Red Storm will travel to Delaware to close out the regular season against the Blue Hens on Saturday afternoon.
