Seventh inning RBI single lifts Seawolves over the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. - With the game tied at two in the seventh inning, Stony Brook used a two-out RBI single off the bat of Brooke Dye to take down St. John's, 3-2, in Tuesday afternoon's home finale in Queens.
The Red Storm (10-20, 7-14 BIG EAST) fell to the Seawolves (24-12, 7-4 America East) for the second time in as many weeks, as both games were decided by two runs or less between the local rivals.
The Johnnies strung together six hits against Seawolves pitching on the afternoon with three, including a home run, coming off the bat of Peyton Cody. Meisha Murray added an RBI single for the Red Storm while seniors Gabriella Conca and Kalei Sorensen each picked up singles in what marked each of the seniors last games at Red Storm Field.
The Seawolves racked up ten hits on the afternoon against Red Storm pitching, as Kayla Kmett, Angela Saric and Erin Brown each saw time in the circle, but their only offense came in the fourth and seventh innings of the contest.
Kmett got the start for the Red Storm in what marked her final game in Queens and was sharp early, as she worked an easy first inning highlighted by a double play from second baseman Amy Mallah. The Johnnies bats would go down in order against Stony Brook starter Shelbi Denman in the first.
While Kmett worked a scoreless second, Cody was the leadoff hitter in the home half of the inning and drove a 3-2 pitch to left-center field and out to give her team the 1-0 lead. The round tripper was the Red Storm catcher's fifth of the season and first since April 11 at Creighton. The Johnnies would get two more runners aboard but failed to score, as they took a 1-0 lead to the third.
After getting the first two outs of the third, the Seawolves would move runners to second and third before a sharp ground ball fielded cleanly by Kaitlyn Lologo at shortstop kept the lead intact, 1-0, and get Kmett out of trouble.
Kmett was lifted from the game in favor of Saric in the road half of the fourth and was greeted with a single to begin the inning. The Seawolves then used a sacrifice bunt and two more hits, including a crucial two-out throwing error on a stolen base attempt, to grab two runs and the lead, 2-1.
The Red Storm offense had an answer in the bottom of the fourth, however, as after Lologo was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and advanced to second, Murray hit a two-out bloop single into right-center field to knot the score at two heading to the fifth inning.
After the first two Stony Brook batters reached in the top of the fifth, Saric settled in and retired three in a row before the Red Storm failed to score in the home half. Both teams also went scoreless in the sixth, as Brown came on for the Johnnies and worked a quick inning, and the two programs went to the final frame knotted at two.
Brown retired the first two batters she faced in the top of the seventh before a single and walk set up first and second for the Seawolves with two outs. The next batter was Dye, who delivered a single back up the middle, plating pinch-runner Emma Campbell to give Stony Brook the 3-2 lead.
The Red Storm had the top of its order up in the home half of the inning, but after Gretchen Bowie walked to begin the frame and stole second, the Johnnies were unable to get her around, falling, 3-2, as relief pitcher Dawn Bodrug picked up the victory.
The Red Storm will finish off its 2021 campaign this Saturday at Delaware with a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 2 p.m. with game two to follow.
