Red Storm, Blue Hens will square off on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
NEWARK, Del. – The St. John's softball team travels to Delaware on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader with the Blue Hens to close out the 2021 regular season.
First pitch in the twin bill between the Red Storm (10-20, 7-14 BIG EAST) and Blue Hens (21-7, 9-5 CAA) is slated for 2 p.m. with the second game set to get underway around 4:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast via the UDBlueHens YouTube channel and live stats will also be available for each contest.
The Red Storm comes in off a midweek loss in its final home game of 2021 to Stony Brook, 3-2. The game was knotted at two in the seventh inning before a two-out RBI single off the bat of Brook Dye lifted the Seawolves to the victory.
Peyton Cody led the way for the Johnnies in that Tuesday afternoon matchup, going 3-4 and slugging a home run to left-center field in the second inning. Meisha Murray added the other RBI with a single to right-center field while Kalei Sorensen and Gabriella Conca picked up hits for the Red Storm.
Saturday's doubleheader will mark the final games in the careers of the Red Storm's eight graduating seniors. The Red Storm's three graduate students, Gretchen Bowie, Kaitlin Mattera and Marissa Rizzi, have put together three of the best careers in the history of St. John's softball, combing for six All-BIG EAST First Team selections. The trio has helped the Red Storm earn over 100 victories throughout their career in Queens, including BIG EAST Regular Season Titles in 2017 and 2019.
While the other five graduates of the program, Amelia Ditolvo, Kayla Kmett, Elyse Morris, Conca and Sorensen, played one less season in Queens than those graduate students, their impact was felt equally. All five were regulars in the Red Storm's starting lineup and in the circle this season, as they contributed to 78 wins over their careers and were integral pieces to the 2019 BIG EAST Regular Season Title.
Delaware will use the doubleheader with the Red Storm as a tune-up for the CAA Tournament which begins next weekend down at James Madison. The Blue Hens boast the top offense in the CAA this season with a .336 team batting average, as eight of their nine starters are hitting over .300 in 2021. Delaware is led offensively by Hannah Garber and Brooke Glanden, who are each hitting over .400, while Glanden has slugged nine home runs this season.
In the circle, Delaware boasts a strong pitching combination of Emily Winburn and Delani Sheehan, who each rank in the top-ten in the CAA in ERA. The Blue Hens currently sit in second place behind Drexel in the conference's North Division. The Red Storm has taken five of the seven matchups between the two teams, including the last one, 8-2, back in Feb. of 2018.
Regardless of the outcome of these two games, it will mark the final time that the Red Storm takes the field in 2021, as it failed to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. The Johnnies have ranked in top four in the conference and qualified each of the last six seasons, the longest stretch in program history. That string of success saw the team capture two regular season titles and the program's first BIG EAST Championship in 2015.
