The Red Storm will compete in Fordham’s home event for first time in three years
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's Cross Country team will travel to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. on Saturday to open the first full season in two years. The race time is set for 10:45 a.m.
This will mark the first competition for the Red Storm under new head coach Elliott Blount, who was hired in August. Blount will look to guide the program to continued success after longtime head coach Jim Hurt retired from St. John's in May.
"We are all excited about the start of the season and the next chapter in the women's cross country program," Blount said. "I'm simply looking to see how well we can transition the little we've done over the past two and half weeks into a solid effort. I really like the way we are working as a unit, and we'll have to continue to do so to accomplish our team goals."
The Red Storm returns several top runners from an abbreviated spring season including Claire Cushing, Katherine Bruno, Tiffany-Ann Matturro and Grace Adolphe. Cushing led the Johnnies in their lone race last spring, turning in a time of 22:11 at the BIG EAST Championships in March.
St. John's will race in Fordham's home event for the first time since 2018. The Johnnies have run well historically at the Fordham Fiasco, including a fifth-place team finish and two top-15 individual finishes three seasons ago.
The Red Storm will compete against several local schools including Fordham, Manhattan, Montclair State and St. Francis (N.Y.).
