Cushing Wins Individual Title at Fordham Fiasco

St. John’s finishes second as a team to open the 2021 season
BRONX, N.Y.- The St. John's cross country team started the fall campaign on a strong note by placing second out of nine teams at Van Cortland Park on Saturday in the Fordham Fiasco.
Junior Claire Cushing got her 2021 off to a winning start by taking the women's 5k race with a time of 19:06.5, a career-best time by more than 30 seconds. The Ontario native averaged 6:08.6 a mile to convincingly take home the individual 5K title by over 12 seconds.
Two other Johnnies joined Cushing in the top 10 overall with graduate student Katherine Bruno finishing close behind in third with a solid time of 19:45.6. Mia Forster, a graduate transfer from Siena, opened her St. John's career with a ninth-place finish at 20:07.07.
Hannah Huleatt broke her personal best by nearly three minutes in her second collegiate meet with a time of 20:46.1, good for 16thplace.
Sophomore Jenna D'Onofrio rounded out the scoring for St. John's with a 41st place finish and a time of 22:36.7, and Tiffany-Ann Matturro secured a top-50 finish with a time of 23:28.5.
Backed by Cushing's overall victory, the Red Storm secured a fourth consecutive top-five finish as a team at the Fordham Fiasco with Saturday's result being the best team finish in school history at Fordham's home meet.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday, September 25, when it travels to Montgomery, N.Y. to take part in the Jasper Invite.
