The Red Storm will compete in Manhattan’s home meet for the first time
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's cross country team will travel to Montgomery, N.Y., to take part in the Jasper Invite, their debut at the event. The 6K race is scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30 a.m..
"To build off the good from Fordham and significantly shrink the spread would be a great step for us," head coach Elliott Blount said. "This group really grinds smart and if we can continue to add elements of sound racing to the competition we'll continue to improve."
St. John's will compete against Manhattan College for the second consecutive meet. The Red Storm finished second at the Fordham Fiasco while Manhattan finished fourth. Along with the Jaspers, St. John's will compete against crosstown foes Fordham, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) and Pace University.
Junior Claire Cushing won the opening meet at Van Cortlandt Park with a time of 19:06.5, a career best time by more than 30 seconds.
Katherine Bruno and Mia Forster followed close behind with times of 19:45.6 and 20:07.7, respectively. Both runners finished in the top 10 overall. Forster is the only member of the team that has experience at Manhattan's home meet as she competed in the event last spring as a member of Siena's cross country team.
Sophomore Hannah Huleatt will look to continue her steady improvement after a top-20 finish and a time of 20:46 in her first collegiate 5k race on September 11.
Joining the quartet of Cushing, Bruno, Forster and Huleatt will be junior Tiffany-Ann Matturro and sophomore Jenna D'Onofrio. Both Matturro and D'Onofrio finished in the top 50 in the opening race of the season.
