Sergey Danilov Named as Assistant Coach

Head coach Yury Gelman has announced the addition of former champion fencer Sergey Danilov to the staff as an assistant coach.

The St. Petersburg native brings a wealth of fencing experience both as a player and as a coach. During his time at the prestigious New York Fencing Academy, Danilov served as the head epee coach and lead several fencers to national and world championship titles including Ariel Simmons who won multiple NCAA bronze medals as a part of Notre Dame's national champion fencing teams.

Danilov also coached on the U.S. Cadet/Junior National team for five years. He was at the helm for several Cadet/Junior World Championships, World Cups and Pan-American Games. In 2019, Danilov led the national team to a second-place finish at the Junior World Championships, their best finish ever as a team.

Danilov has also spent time in several other high-level fencing academies, including the Alliance Fencing Academy in Houston, Texas and the Fencing Alliance of Ohio. While there, Danilov served as both a coach for the epee teams and taught private lessons.

As an athlete in his native Russia, Danilov earned several accolades on the national level. He earned a national championship as a member of the Russian Junior National Team in 1999. Three years later, Danilov won a silver medal while competing at the senior level of the Russian National team. Danilov also earned the Master of Sports of Russia which is a prestigious honor given to athletes with the highest achievements at national events.
