Four Red Storm players post double-figures during in the road loss.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (Jan. 19, 2022) – The St John's women's basketball team dropped a BIG EAST battle to local foe Seton Hall, 84-79, at Walsh Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Four Red Storm players scored in double figures with Leilani Correa leading the way once again with 19 points. The Manchester, N.J., native went 7-for-15 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Unique Drake logged 18 points, going 8-for-19 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers. Kadaja Bailey and Danielle Patterson rounded out the Johnnies top scorers, posting 17 and 11 points, respectively. Rayven Peeples grabbed 13 rebounds for her fifth-straight effort with double-digit boards.

The Red Storm (5-11, 1-5 BIG EAST) jumped out in front early, shooting 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the floor in the opening quarter. The Johnnies defense was also strong, holding the Pirates scoreless from beyond the arc and allowing Seton Hall (8-7, 3-4 BIG EAST) to shoot just 25 percent in the period. Drake drained a bucket as time expired to extend the St. John's advantage to 21-9 after 10 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, St. John's remained solid from the floor with a 31.3 field goal percentage. However, the Pirate offense came alive, as Seton Hall shot 50 percent in the period and drained three shots from beyond the arc. Drake continued to pace the Red Storm offense with five points during the quarter, helping the Johnnies take a 39-37 lead into the locker room.

The teams went point-for-point in the third quarter, but the Seton Hall offense remained hot, shooting 64.7 percent over the course of the period. The Johnnies went 8-for-16 from the floor but were outscored 25-20 in the third. Bailey was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 line during the period to lead St. John's with nine points, but the Red Storm trailed, 62-59, with 10 minutes remaining.

With one quarter left to play, both squads engaged in a back-and-forth battle with neither team leading by more than five. A layup by Drake gave St. John's the two-point edge with 1:41 left to play, but 5-0 Seton Hall run followed. Down three, St. John's had a chance to tie the game late, but a turnover with just 15 seconds remaining sealed the Red Storm's fate.

Seton Hall's Lauren Park-Lane led all players with 31 points while Andra Espinoza-Hunter logged 25 for the Pirates.

The Johnnies will return home for the first time in 2022 on Sunday when the Red Storm welcomes No. 9 Connecticut to Queens. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. on SNY.
