St. John’s Drops BIG EAST Battle with UConn, 75-57

QUEENS (Jan. 23, 2022) – The St. John's women's basketball team fell to No. 9 Connecticut, 75-57, at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Kadaja Bailey led the Red Storm (5-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) with 21 points. The Long Beach, N.Y., native went 10-for-17 from the floor while also recording three assists and three steals. Leilani Correa posted double-figures, shooting 7-for-14 from the field and 2-for-4 from three for 19 points.
The Red Storm battled back-and-forth with UConn (11-4, 6-0 BIG EAST) in the first quarter, as St. John's shot 7-for-15 overall including a pair of 3-pointers. The Johnnies defense held UConn to just 28.6 percent from beyond the arc, but the Huskies ended the frame on a 7-0 run, putting the Johnnies behind 20-17 after 10 minutes.
The St. John's offense stalled in the second quarter, as the Red Storm started the period with five straight misses from the floor. Camree Clegg broke through for the Red Storm with a three, but the Johnnies still trailed UConn 25-20 with 6:16 remaining in the first half. The squad closed out the frame shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc, but the Huskies still managed 42-31 lead at the break.
St. John's went 6-for-13 from the floor in the third quarter, but could not convert from beyond the arc, missing all four of its chances. Correa and Bailey combined for all 15 Red Storm points in the period. St. John's was able to hold UConn under 20 points for the frame, but the Johnnies trailed 61-46 with one quarter remaining.
The Red Storm began the final period with a 7-0 rally to cut the Huskies' lead to single digits, but a timeout by the opposition followed by a 3-pointer with 8:09 remaining stalled the St. John's comeback attempt. Despite shooting 45.5 percent from the field over the final 10 minutes, the Red Storm was no match for the Huskies, whose 14 points in the final frame sealed their 167th consecutive conference victory.
The Huskies were led in scoring by Caroline Ducharme, who shot 13-22 from the field and tallied 28 points. Olivia Nelson-Odoba logged a double-double with 18 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Tuesday night when the team heads to Georgetown for a BIG EAST battle at McDonough Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
