Joe Tartamella earns career win 176 during rout of Georgetown
WASHINGTON D.C. (Jan. 25, 2021) – St. John's Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella recorded his 176th career win during the Red Storm's 80-52 victory over Georgetown on Tuesday night. The victory tied the record set by Tartamella's mentor, Kim Barnes Arico, for first place on the program's all-time wins list.
Four players scored in double figures as Camree Clegg led the Red Storm (6-12, 2-6 BIG EAST) with a career-high 20 points including five 3-pointers. Rayven Peeples posted a double-double, logging 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Hoyas (6-9, 1-6 BIG EAST). Sitota Gines and Danielle Cosgrove rounded out the Johnnies' top scorers, chipping in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
As a team, the Red Storm bench outscored Georgetown 48-13. The Johnnies also scored 32 points off turnovers and 14 fast break points.
The Johnnies offense got off to a hot start, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc. Peeples was a perfect 2-2 from the floor and 3-3 from the foul line to lead the Red Storm with seven points while Gines posted a pair of threes in her first collegiate game for six points through 10 minutes of play, putting the Johnnies ahead 27-15 at the break.
St. John's put in work on both sides of the floor, holding the Hoyas to just 11 points. The Red Storm shot 8-for-17 from the floor while logging 27 points on offense including four 3-pointers in the second quarter. Clegg was lethal from three, adding three triples in the frame. She tallied three points from the charity stripe to lead the Red Storm with 12 points in the quarter, helping the team to a 54-26 edge at the half.
Coming out of the break, the Johnnies offense stalled, shooting 35.3 percent from the floor while going just 1-for-9 from three. The Hoya offense shot 41.7 percent during the period, but the Johnnies allowed just one triple from the opposition. With both teams scoring 17 points apiece during the quarter, St. Johns maintained a 71-43 advantage heading into the final frame.
The Johnnies continued to cruise during the final period. Despite shooting 20 percent as a team, St. John's stymied the Georgetown offense, allowing just three makes from the field and no 3-pointers, helping the Red Storm secure the 80-52 victory.
Milan Bolden-Morris led Georgetown with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Tartamella will look to gain sole possession of first place on the program's all-time wins list when St. John's faces off against BIG EAST foe DePaul on the road on Friday night. Tip-off from Wintrust Arena is slated for 7 p.m. ET on FS1.
