Women’s tennis captures tenth-consecutive home opening win
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's tennis team has won ten straight home openers after a seamless victory, 4-0, over Siena on Friday afternoon.
The Red Storm dominated the 2021 MAAC Champions inside of the friendly confines of the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens to move to 2-0 on the season.
In doubles, Yesica de Lucas and Jayden Nielsen held serve on their home court defeating Siena's top duo of Meagan Brown and Laia Giralt by a score of 6-4. Emilie Haakansson and no. 112 Mouna Bouzgarrou orchestrated a decisive 6-1 victory to capture the doubles point.
In individual competition, Bouzgarrou, Nielsen and Haakansson all recorded lopsided victories in straight sets. The other three singles matches were declared a no contest after St. John's had clinched the team win.
The Johnnies have an eight-day layoff prior to their next contest at Rutgers on Feb. 6, as the Red Storm look to snap a seven-match losing streak against the Scarlet Knights.
