Red Storm will look to extend its unbeaten streak to three
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2022) – On the heels of back-to-back results last week, the St. John's men's soccer team will return to Belson Stadium on Wednesday night when it plays host to DePaul. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network with David Gass on the call.
In their most recent contest on Saturday night, the Red Storm took a point from Creighton, a team that climbed as high as no. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches poll earlier this season. Playing on the road in front of more than 1,000 fans, the Red Storm led 1-0 for 50 minutes before the Bluejays tied it on a penalty kick in the 89th minute. A few days prior at Belson Stadium, St. John's played then-No. 12 Xavier to a scoreless draw. It was the team's first result against an opponent ranked 12th or better since defeating No. 10 Georgetown, 1-0, on Oct. 28, 2017.
For his efforts against Creighton and Xavier, Ryan Foley earned a spot on Monday's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The redshirt sophomore goalkeeper made nine saves across 180 minutes of play and allowed only one goal on a penalty kick. Foley provided the heroics despite making just his second and third career starts.
Einar Lye was the lone goal scorer for St. John's last week, finding the back of the net in the 38th minute against Creighton on Saturday night. His second marker of the season came off an assist from freshman Juston Rainey, who recorded his first collegiate point on the play.
The elimination of overtime in regular season college soccer and the subsequent increase in draws has resulted in bunched conference standings at the midway mark of BIG EAST play. St. John's currently owns five points and sits in a tie with Creighton for seventh place in the league ledger, but the Red Storm and Bluejays are only four points out of a tie for first place with Xavier and Seton Hall. Butler, Georgetown and Villanova are locked in a three-way tie for third with seven points apiece while Providence has sole possession of sixth place with six points. Three of the Red Storm's final five BIG EAST games will come against teams situated in the bottom three of the conference standings. The top six teams in the final BIG EAST regular season standings will clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Tournament, the semifinals and finals of which will be hosted at Maryland SoccerPlex.
DePaul comes to Queens in search of its first conference win, as the Blue Demons have played to a draw in three of their four conference matches so far. DePaul has not allowed more than one goal in any BIG EAST match this season, but has found the back of the net just twice in 360 minutes of league action.
Nine different DePaul players have tallied a goal this season. Only one of those Blue Demons, senior midfielder Michael Anderson, has scored twice.
The Blue Demons are being outshot by an average margin of nearly 2-to-1 this fall. In four BIG EAST matches, opponents have out-chanced DePaul, 60-25.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz has been a stalwart between the pipes for DePaul, compiling a 0.90 goals against average and a .833 save percentage in 10 starts, four of which have been shutouts. On Saturday against Georgetown, he made five stops to hold on for a 1-1 draw against the 2019 national champions. The Aurora, Ill., native earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Third Team in 2021.
St. John's carries an all-time record of 10-3-4 against the Blue Demons into Wednesday's match, including wins in four of the last six and a four-match unbeaten streak dating back to 2017.
Since 2008, DePaul has defeated the Red Storm just once, a 1-0 overtime win at Belson Stadium on Oct. 29, 2016.
In the last meeting between the teams on Nov. 2, 2019, at Belson Stadium, Lye and Drew Rosen found the back of the net in a 4-2 victory for the Red Storm that clinched a top-two finish in the BIG EAST. St. John's would go on to make the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 that season for the 12th time in program history.
