Midfielder tallied a goal and an assist in Red Storm’s 1-0-1 week
QUEENS, N.Y.- St. John's women's soccer's Jessica Garziano was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. Gina Muzi earned a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod for her efforts in the Red Storm's 1-0-1 week.
Â
Garziano ignited the Johnnies' offense in Thursday's convincing 3-1 win over the Butler Bulldogs. The Melville, N.Y., native blasted a ball past the Butler keeper into the top right corner of the net to square the game at one in the 27th minute of action. The midfielder added a key assist in the Red Storm's third goal of the contest as she expertly threaded a ball into the feet of Nicole Gordon who calmly guided the ball into the net.
Â
Through 16 matches, Garziano is tied for first in assists with five and fifth for total points with 11. She also leads the team in total shots (33) and shots on target (16). Monday's announcement marked the first individual award for Garziano this season and the third distinction overall to go with two Weekly Honor Roll nods.
Â
Muzi was solid between the pipes in two starts last week, allowing zero goals in 158 consecutive minutes of action. Muzi made four combined saves, including three critical stops in a scoreless draw with No. 22 Xavier on Sunday. The Delafield, Wis., native is currently tied for second in the conference with seven shutouts and owns a stingy goals-against average of 0.72 which is good for fourth in the BIG EAST. Monday marked the second honor for the senior netminder this season after being named to the Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 12.
Â
The Red Storm will return to Belson Stadium for its final regular season home match on Sunday when it welcomes Marquette for 1 p.m. showdown. The conference tilt will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
