Prolific duo looks to continue success against the Northeast’s best
QUEENS, N.Y. – After shining thus far throughout the fall, St. John's men's tennis doubles squad of Axel Vila Antuna and Diogo Marques will ready for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Super Regionals this weekend.
After advancing through the regional competition with three victories in Philadelphia, the Red Storm pairing locked up a position in Cambridge, Mass., to compete against top players from the Northeast region.
The 16-team doubles bracket will take the court starting on Friday on Harvard's campus. Vila Antuna and Marques are slate to take on Bryant's Diego Serra Sparrow and Leonardo Mileikowsky in the first round.
Marques has gelled nicely with his new doubles partner, Vila Antuna, who anchored the Johnnies at the no. 1 position in both singles and doubles in 2021-22. The duo has gone won all five of their matches this fall.
Individually, both shined against the nation's best at the ITA All-American Championships. Vila Antuna tallied a victory while Marques posted three wins in Tulsa, Okla.
