Red Storm and Huskies will kick off crucial BIG EAST battle at 7 p.m. on FloFC
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2022) – The St. John's men's soccer team will host its final home game of the regular season on Saturday night, welcoming the Connecticut Huskies to Belson Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on FloFC. Pat O'Keefe will have the call from Queens.
Prior to the start of the contest, the Red Storm will honor the contributions of 12 student-athletes playing in what could be their final match at Belson Stadium. That veteran cohort includes: Andrew Hammersley, Jordan Bailon, Atila Ashrafi, Sanoussi Sangary, Einar Lye, Wesley Leggett, Brandon Knapp, Drew Rosen, Adrian Roseth, Tommy Scalici, Jack Russo and Anthony Petrucci.
St. John's will play its penultimate matchup of the regular season following a week off from competition. The Red Storm was last in action on Oct. 22 night when it fell to Butler, 2-1, in Indianapolis. The Johnnies jumped ahead in the third minute, but the Bulldogs equalized just 19 seconds later. Butler moved in front in the 37th minute on Jack Streberger's second marker of the evening, and the Red Storm proved unable to pull even. The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for the Johnnies.
Antek Sienkiel scored the Red Storm's lone goal on Saturday, his team leading seventh of the season. The redshirt junior from Newtown, Pa., has now recorded at least one point in each of his last three games and four of his last six overall. The 2021 Second Team All-MAAC selection at Marist is tied for third in the BIG EAST in total goals this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Zenden Hart played all 90 minutes at Butler, allowing two goals in the same contest for the first time this season. The Booker Bay, Australia, native ranks among the top five of the BIG EAST in both goals against average (0.95) and save percentage (.800). Late last week, both Hart and teammate Markus Pusztahegyi were recognized as two of the nation's top 100 freshmen by TopDrawerSoccer.
Saturday's match against the Huskies will prove crucial for both teams' chances at clinching a spot in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship. St. John's enters with weekend in eighth place with a league record of 2-3-3 (nine points), but is only two points shy of moving into fifth. UConn (3-3-2, 11 points) currently occupies that fifth spot, one point clear of Creighton and Providence in a tie for sixth. The top six teams in the final regular season standings will earn a berth to the conference tournament, the quarterfinals of which will begin on Saturday, Nov. 5, at campus sites. The semifinals and championship matches will be held at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md., on Nov. 10 and 13, respectively.
After starting the season 2-5-1 and going winless in their first three conference matches, the Huskies are 5-1-1 in their last seven decisions, including an active five-game unbeaten streak. Following a pair of 1-0 BIG EAST wins over Villanova and DePaul, the Huskies closed their non-conference slate with a 4-0 win over Stonehill on Wednesday night in Storrs. Frantz Pierrot scored twice for the Huskies, who outshot the Skyhawks, 17-6.
Pierrot, a graduate transfer from Merrimack, is the team's leading scorer with five goals on the campaign. Six other Huskies have tallied multiple goals on the season, including Eli Conway, Scott Tesori and Okem Chime with three apiece. Conway, a freshman from Mount Olive, N.J., was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday after netting the game-winner against Villanova on Oct. 19.
A graduate transfer from Boston University, Michael Stone has started all eight of the Huskies' BIG EAST matches this season in goal. He owns a 1.25 goals against average and a .677 save percentage with a pair of shutouts against league foes.
St. John's and UConn, who possess one of the BIG EAST's premier rivalries from an historical perspective, will meet for the 38th time on Saturday evening. The Red Storm owns a 17-14-6 advantage in the series history dating back to 1981.
St. John's leads the BIG EAST with nine conference tournament crowns all-time while UConn ranks right behind with seven.
The Red Storm is undefeated against the Huskies dating back to 2014, going 3-0-1 in its last four against UConn.
Despite the rivalry being relatively close overall, UConn has never won a match at Belson Stadium, going 1-10-4 all-time in Queens with its only victory coming back in 1998.
