Red Storm will wrap regular season on Wednesday at Marquette
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team played Connecticut to a scoreless draw on Saturday night at Belson Stadium.
Hosting its final home match of the season, St. John's honored the careers of 12 upperclassmen prior to the start of the contest: Andrew Hammersley, Jordan Bailon, Adrian Roseth, Wesley Leggett, Tommy Scalici, Jack Russo, Anthony Petrucci, Atila Ashrafi, Einar Lye, Sanoussi Sangary, Drew Rosen and Brandon Knapp.
Freshman goalkeeper Zenden Hart made four stops to record his second clean sheet of the campaign. The former Australian youth international logged two saves in the final 10 minutes of the contest to help maintain the scoreless draw.
The Huskies (7-6-3, 3-3-3 BIG EAST) held an edge for much of the first half, outshooting the Red Storm by a 6-1 margin in the opening stanza.
A few minutes into the second half, St. John's (4-7-5, 2-3-4 BIG EAST) began to tilt the field in its favor.
The Red Storm's best scoring chance of the night came in the 59th minute, as Leggett play a ball into space for a racing Nigel Griffith. Griffith took control just outside the box with no one between him and the keeper, but a trailing UConn defender managed to deflect his shot, neutralizing the threat.
St. John's registered a flurry of chances between the 76th and 79th minutes, as Roseth, Antek Sienkiel and Aidan Borra each fired off a shot. The Red Storm appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the 79th on a header goal from Lye, but the play was ruled offside, negated by the assistant referee's flag.
The Red Storm made a furious push in the closing minutes of the contest, but could not convert on any of its remaining chances.
The Johnnies will close the regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Marquette for an 8 p.m. tilt. The Red Storm can still qualify for the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship with a win, but will need some other results around the league involving UConn, Providence and Creighton to go in its favor.
