Red Storm in need of win to keep postseason hopes alive
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2022) – The St. John's men's soccer team will close the 2022 regular season on Wednesday night, traveling to Milwaukee to take on Marquette. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on FloFC.
After 10 league games, the Red Storm's postseason fate will all come down to Wednesday night. Entering the week ranked eighth in the BIG EAST standings, the Johnnies can still clinch the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship's sixth and final spot with a pair of favorable results on Wednesday night. First, the Red Storm must win against the Golden Eagles. A draw or a loss would eliminate the Johnnies from postseason contention. St. John's also needs some help in the 7 p.m. match between Connecticut and Georgetown, as the Huskies must lose or draw against the Hoyas in order for the Red Storm to remain alive. St. John's holds the tiebreaker over UConn thanks to a Sept. 16 win over Georgetown, the BIG EAST Regular Season Champion.
The Red Storm has competed in four of the last five BIG EAST Tournaments with its only absence coming in the COVID-effected spring campaign of 2021. As a program, St. John's has qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament 29 times and owns a 35-18-5 all-time mark in the championship, good enough for a .647 winning percentage. The Red Storm's nine BIG EAST Tournament crowns are a conference record.
The Red Storm rolls into Milwaukee after battling to a scoreless draw against UConn on Saturday night, the club's fifth result in its last six opportunities. After being outshot, 6-1, in the opening half, the Red Storm outchanced the Huskies by a 5-4 margin in the second stanza, but was unable to break through despite a furious push in the closing minutes.
Zenden Hart made four saves for the Red Storm to record his second shutout of the season. The former Australian youth international was recognized by the league office on Monday, earning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for the third time this season. He also garnered the accolade on Sept. 19 and Oct. 17 after leading the Red Storm to wins over Georgetown and DePaul, respectively.
Marquette enters the final day of the regular season looking for its first win in conference play, as the Golden Eagles are 0-5-4 against league foes so far in 2022. The Golden Eagles went .500 in non-league play, but have not emerged victorious since a 5-2 win over UW-Milwaukee on Sept. 20.
Marquette boasts the conference's third-highest scoring average, posting 1.82 goals per contest. Eight different Golden Eagles have scored multiple goals this season, led by Lukas Sunesson with six. The senior forward from Sweden was a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American in the spring of 2021, helping the Golden Eagles reach the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. Last season, he scored six goals on his way to All-BIG EAST Second Team honors.
Chandler Hallwood and Ludvig Malberg have split time between the pipes for Marquette this season, turning in a combined goals against average of 1.82 and compiling a .652 save percentage. Three of the team's five losses in conference play have come by a score of 1-0.
St. John's and Marquette will meet for the 12th time in the history of the two programs on Wednesday night. Each side has claimed four wins to go along with three draws since the series began in 2005 when the Golden Eagles joined the BIG EAST.
The Red Storm has taken each of the past two decisions against Marquette in lopsided fashion, winning 4-0 in both 2021 and 2019. Before the recent offensive explosion, St. John's had gone six straight games against Marquette from 2013-18 without scoring a goal.
St. John's is 2-2-1 all-time in Milwaukee.
