Red Storm will look to earn its second straight result on Saturday night
QUEENS, N.Y. – After picking up a crucial BIG EAST point on Wednesday at home against the nation's no. 12 team, the St. John's men's soccer squad will look to carry that momentum into a road clash with Creighton on Saturday night in Omaha.
Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on FloFC. Rob Simms and Ryan Piers will have the call from Morrison Stadium.
The Red storm travels to the Cornhusker State on the heels of a scoreless draw with No. 12 Xavier on Wednesday night at Belson Stadium. The Musketeers outplayed the Red Storm in the first half, earning a 13-1 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Johnnies tilted the field in the final 45 minutes, outshooting Xavier, 3-2, in the second half. The Red Storm also registered two corners kicks while surrendering none in the latter stanza.
St. John's managed to withstand the Musketeers' furious first-half onslaught thanks in large part to the play of Ryan Foley. Making his second start of the season in goal, the redshirt sophomore from Malverne, N.Y., recorded five of his career-high six saves in the opening 45 minutes. Of the three goalkeepers that have seen action for the Red Storm in 2022, none had logged a Division I appearance prior to this season.
Nearing the midway mark of conference action, the BIG EAST standings are incredibly bunched from top to bottom. St. John's and Creighton enter their Saturday tilt tied for seventh in the table with four points apiece, but are only three points shy of Butler and Villanova in first place. Georgetown, Xavier and Seton Hall are tied for third with six points while Providence has five. The top six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Tournament, the semifinals and finals of which will be held at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
St. John's and Creighton, two of the five BIG EAST teams to make the NCAA Tournament and advance to the second round last November, were picked to finish third and fourth, respectively, in the league's preseason coaches' poll.
Redshirt junior midfielder Antek Sienkiel has scored half of the team's 12 goals this season. The Marist transfer's six markers are currently tied for third in the BIG EAST and 25th in all of Division I. He is the first Johnnie to log six or more goals in a season since Tani Oluwaseyi recorded 11 on his way to BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2019.
Creighton welcomes the Red Storm on a full week's rest, as the Bluejays have not played since a 3-1 win over Villanova on Oct. 1 in Omaha. The Bluejays have recorded a majority of their results inside the friendly confines of Morrison Stadium, going 3-1-3 in home matches. Conversely, St. John's will be looking for its first result of the season on the road.
The Bluejays boast the second highest scoring offense in the nation, averaging 3.11 goals per game. Only two other teams in the BIG EAST—Butler (2.50) and Marquette (2.09)—average two or more markers per contest.
Junior forward Duncan McGuire leads the team and ranks second in the league with seven goals. Five of those tallies came in the first two games of the season, as McGuire garnered national player of the week honors from both United Soccer Coaches and TopDrawerSoccer. Teammates Jackson Castro and Owen O'Malley have logged six goals apiece this fall, good enough for third in the conference.
Graduate student Paul Kruse has started all nine games between the pipes for Creighton. In his fifth season with the Bluejays, Kruse has compiled a 1.35 goals against average and a .694 save percentage.
Creighton and St. John's were familiar with one another long before the Bluejays joined the BIG EAST. Their first meeting came in 1996, a 2-1 win for the Red Storm in the national semifinal on the way to the program's first NCAA title. The Bluejays returned the favor in 2002 with a 1-0 win in the round of 16 on their path to the program's third College Cup berth. The following year in the national quarterfinal, St. John's erased a two-goal deficit in the second half to move past Creighton and into the College Cup despite playing nearly the entire match with 10 men.
Creighton enjoyed success against the Johnnies early in its BIG EAST tenure, going 3-0-2 against the Red Storm from 2013-17. St. John's, however, is 3-1-0 in its last four against the Bluejays, including a 2-0 win at Morrison Stadium in 2019.
Overall, St. John's and Creighton are deadlocked at 5-5-2 in 12 all-time meetings between the programs.
