St. John’s Battles Creighton to 1-1 Draw

Einar Lye scores second goal this season in conference clash at Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. – St. John's men's soccer played Creighton to a 1-1 draw at Morrison Stadium on Saturday night.
Einar Lye scored the Johnnies' (3-6-3, 1-2-2 BIG EAST) lone goal in the 38th minute. Juston Rainey threaded a pass to Lye in the midfield and the graduate student sped by the Bluejay (4-2-3, 1-1-2 BIG EAST) defenders before rocketing a ball past the keeper into the bottom of the net
Creighton salvaged the conference draw with a late equalizer in the 89th minute. Duncan McGuire scored on a penalty kick for his eighth goal this season.
The Red Storm picked up its third draw this season and its second straight in conference play. The Johnnies battled No. 12 Xavier to a scoreless draw at Belson Stadium on Wednesday night. St. John's previously posted a 1-1 tie with Loyola Maryland on September 9.
Lye's tally marked his second of the season and 12th of his career in the Red and White. Rainey recorded his first collegiate assist during the match
Ryan Foley made his third start between the pipes this year. The redshirt sophomore allowed the lone goal while tallying three stops in the match. Paul Kruse got the start for the Bluejays and the graduate student logged five saves during his 90 minutes in the net.
Both teams came out on the attack to begin the match, with shots favoring the Johnnie squad 8-5. The Red Storm defense blocked three attempts with keeper Foley logging a save in the 29th minute. Offensively, the Johnnies sent a flurry of shots toward the Creighton keeper landing five on target.
With the final attempt of the half, Lye broke the match open as he slid a shot by the keeper into the bottom of the net in the 38th minute. Rainey perfectly played a ball to the midfielder, who then dribbled past the Creighton defense before sending a blast into the bottom of the net.
The second half saw the Creighton offense outshoot the Red Storm, 9-3. The Johnnies' best look in the half came in the 58th minute when Atila Ashrafi powered a ball off the crossbar, nearly missing the net for the senior.
With less than two minutes to play, St. John's was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Creighton. McGuire sunk his kick into the bottom right corner of the net for the equalizing tally. The shot was the final attempt of the match, resulting in a draw for both programs.
St. John's returns to BIG EAST action on Wednesday when the Johnnie squad welcomes DePaul for a conference clash at Belson Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
