St. John’s Sweeps DePaul in Straight Sets

Red Storm split the weekend 1-1, improve to 4-2 in the BIG EAST
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team dominated in a three-set sweep of DePaul on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm (13-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) avenged its loss against the Golden Eagles last night to split the weekend. DePaul (6-12, 2-4 BIG EAST) suffered its second defeat of its road trip after losing in five sets at Seton Hall the previous night.
The Red Storm offensive attack had three individuals with double-digit kill efforts. Giorgia Walther recorded her second double-double of the season, notching a match-high 17 kills and team-high 13 digs. Rachele Rastelli and Lucrezia Lodi recorded 12 and 10 kills, respectively. The NCAA's leader in total assists, Wiktoria Kowalczyk tallied 34 in the match. Erin Jones registered a season-high 10 digs and six helpers.
The Johnnies hit .287, with 49 kills in the match while holding the Blue Demons to .176 hitting and 37 kills.
After a point-for-point start to the first frame, St. John's broke away on a 6-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. The Red Storm controlled the remainder of the set, never allowing the Blue Demons to regain the lead. A kill by Ludovica Zola clinched the 25-16 Johnnies victory. Walther led the attack with six kills while Rastelli added five. St. John's hit an outstanding .531 as a team in the frame.
The Red Storm posted a slow start to the second stanza, trailing 14-9. The Red Storm used a timeout and responded out of the break to cut the deficit to 17-15. DePaul strung together a few more points before St. John's tied the set at 20 all. Four kills by Walther fueled the Johnnies to secure the 25-21 victory.
Following a 6-1 run early in the third set, head coach Joanne Persico called a timeout with her team trailing, 16-12. Jones sparked the Red Storm rally with a kill and an ace helping the 5-0 St. John's run. The Blue Demons burned a timeout before a back-and-forth battle ensued resulting in the set being tied for a final time at 24. A kill by Rastelli, and a Blue Demons attack error clinched the 26-24 third set victory for the Red Storm.
St. John's will conclude its three match homestand with a match on Wednesday night against Seton Hall in Carnesecca Arena. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
