Red Storm will look to move to 4-0 against Seawolves on Saturday at 2 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's basketball team will conclude its four-game homestand to open the 2022-23 campaign, when it welcomes local foe Stony Brook for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday.
The Red Storm will look to move to 4-0 on the year at Carnesecca Arena, as the contest will be live streamed on FloSports with Kevin Connelly on the call.
For the first time since 2018, the Johnnies are off to a 3-0 start. In its last time out, St. John's stormed away Temple in the fourth quarter compiling an 11-0 run to the end the game and seal a victory, 66-54.
Rayven Peeples spearheaded the effort on Wednesday night, pouring in 18 points and matched a career-high with 17 rebounds. The forward nearly reached a double-double in the second half alone, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine boards in the latter 20 minutes.
On the year, Peeples is averaging 12.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per outing. The Detroit, Mich., native is shooting an efficient 75 percent from field goal range, which currently ranks first in the BIG EAST. Her double-digit rebound mark ranks fourth in the conference and 44th nationally, as of Nov. 18.
Veteran guards Kadaja Bailey and Jayla Everett has served as the catalysts offensively, leading the team in scoring. Bailey is posting 17.7 points per game, which ranks ninth in the league. Everett has reached double-figures in each of her first three games in Queens, averaging 13.7 points per contest.
The Red Storm defense has been stellar through three games, allowing opponents to just 48 points per game, which ranks 22nd in NCAA Division I. In the fourth quarter, opponents have shot a lowly 26.8 percent from the field.
St. John's and local foe Stony Brook will meet for the 11th time in the history of the two programs on Saturday afternoon. In 2021, the two sides met on Nov. 14 on Long Island. The Seawolves prevailed 72-60, inside Island Federal Arena.
The Seawolves will make the short trip from Long Island with a 2-1 record to start the year. In their most recent contest, the Seawolves overcame a 26-point deficit to squeak past Iona, 73-71, on Nov. 14. Preseason All-CAA selection Anastasia Warren leads the way for the Seawolves, averaging 20.5 points per game. After scoring just six points in the season-opening loss to Syracuse, the guard has poured in 28 in each of her last two outings.
The first meeting between the two schools occurred in St. John's inaugural season in 1974-75. The then-nicknamed Express earned a lopsided victory at home in Queens, 53-26, over Stony Brook on Jan. 22, 1975. To this day, it marks the fewest points scored in a single game by an opponent in program history.
Following the end of the homestand, the Johnnies will head to the Las Vegas Invitational for games against Memphis and UTSA over the Thanksgiving break.
