Boyd, Garziano and Riggins received distinction from the conference
QUEENS, N.Y.- Three Johnnies received postseason honors from the BIG EAST on Wednesday morning. Brooke Boyd and Jessica Garziano were named to the first and second team, respectively, and Emily Riggins was named to the All-Freshman team.Â
Â
Boyd earned first-team distinction following an outstanding year at center back for the Red Storm. The graduate student out Silver Spring, Md., scored two goals this season, including a crucial game-tying tally in a 1-1 draw against Creighton on Oct. 6.Â
Â
Garziano earned an All-BIG EAST honor for the second consecutive season, after being named to the second team in the fall of 2021. The senior midfielder tied for the team lead with five assists and paced the Johnnies in shots and shots on goal with 37Â and 17, respectively. The Melville, N.Y., native tallied three goals in her final season in Queens.Â
Â
Riggins made a name for herself in her first year as a Johnnie. The Bethpage, N.Y., native logged more than 1,250Â minutes in 17 starts, primarily at fullback, for the Red Storm. Riggins logged four shots, including one on target, and an assist in the 1-0 win over Providence. The defender has played with a maturity well beyond her years and has been a key to the Red Storm's success this season. Both Boyd and Riggins were integral parts to a St. John's defense that allowed only 14 goals and a mere six in conference play.Â
Â
The Red Storm will return to action on Thursday when it takes on No. 24 Xavier in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Championship. Kick-off from the Maryland SoccerPlex is set for 4 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.Â
