Red Storm to take on Memphis and UTSA on Nov. 25-26 in holiday tournament
LAS VEGAS- The St. John's women's basketball team will compete in the Las Vegas Invitational over the Thanksgiving break at The Mirage on Nov. 25-26.
The Red Storm will meet Memphis on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET and UTSA the following day at 4:15 p.m. ET. Both contests will be streamed live on FloHoops, as Kevin Brown and Ty Collins on the call from The Mirage.
The Johnnies arrive Las Vegas in their first road trip of the season, after going a perfect 4-0 in the season-opening homestand. In its most recent appearance, St. John's utilized an explosive 28-point third quarter to run past local foe Stony Brook, 78-52.
Through the first two weeks of the 2022-23 campaign, the stifling defense has shined, allowing the opposition to an average just 49.0 points per game. The Red Storm currently rank 17th in the nation in scoring defense, as of games played through Nov. 23.
Sharpshooting guards Kadaja Bailey and Jayla Everett have spearheaded the scoring efforts for St. John's. An All-BIG EAST Preseason choice, Bailey leads the team with 16.0 points per outing. Everett has meshed well into the Red Storm offensive attack, the Pittsburgh transfer is adding 14.3 points per contest. The redshirt senior has flourished from three-point range, making 40.7 percent of her attempts from beyond-the-arc.
On the interior, Jillian Archer and Rayven Peeples have cleaned up on the glass in the early-going of the 2022-23 season. Peeples is averaging 11.0 points and 10.0 per outing, one of five players in the conference that is currently averaging a double-double. The redshirt senior is shooting at a 72.7 percent clip, which leads the BIG EAST. Her rebound mark currently checks in at fifth in the league 41st nationally. Archer is collecting 8.0 rebounds a game, which ranks eighth in the league. The Georgetown transfer enjoyed her best game in a St. John's uniform against Stony Brook, posting nine points and 13 points in the winning effort.
The Red Storm will kick-off play in Las Vegas with Memphis on Friday. Memphis enters the tournament with a 4-1 record on the year, fresh off a 89-76 triumph over Southern Illinois on Tuesday.
The Tigers boast an explosive offense that is currently averaging 85.8 points per game. That mark ranks 18th nationally, as of Nov. 24. Memphis is led by a pair of veteran guards Madison Griggs and Jamirah Shutes, who leads the team is scoring. Shutes is averaging 16.6 points per game, while Griggs logs 15.8 per contest, including shooting 50 percent from three-point range.
The following day, the Johnnies will play its second contest of the competition against UTSA. Saturday will mark the first time St. John's and UTSA have ever met on the hardwood. The Roadrunners are 1-2 on the year, most recently capturing their first win of the season in a 76-70 victory over Abilene Christian. UTSA is led by USC transfer Jordyn Jenkins, who is averaging 14.0 points per night.
Following this weekend's tournament, St. John's will embark into BIG EAST play when it travels to Butler on Dec. 2 for a 7 p.m. tilt in Indianapolis.
