Red Storm log two wins at the Las Vegas Invitational
LAS VEGAS- The St. John's women's basketball team held off UTSA down the stretch and collected a win, 69-64, at the Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday.
The Roadrunners had a chance to tie with just three seconds remaining, but a Jordyn Jenkins three-point attempt didn't fall. The Red Storm sealed the victory with two made free throws to advance to 6-0.
The Red Storm shot a season-best 12-of-24 (50 percent) from beyond-the-arc in the winning effort, including six made three-points attempts in the opening quarter. The 12 made three-point field goals were St. John's most since Nov. 30, 2019, its last time in Las Vegas against IUPUI.
The Johnnies two leading scorers Kadaja Bailey and Jayla Everett captained the offensive effort at The Mirage. Bailey poured in a team-high 15 points, shooting 3-of-5 from three-point range and grabbed six boards. Everett contributed 14 points, marking her eighth-consecutive game finishing in double-figures.
Jillian Archer was the third player who scored double-figures, adding a season-high 12 points at The Mirage.
Mimi Reid stuffed the stat sheet logging eight points, five assists and four steals on Saturday.
In the first, quarter the Red Storm came out hot from three-point land, nailing four of its first five attempts. After UTSA jumped out a 5-0 advantage, Bailey hit two straight triples to open the scoring before Mimi Reid banked one in from beyond-the-arc to cap off a 9-0 St. John's run.
UTSA clawed back in the second frame behind its leading scorer Jenkins, who helped orchestrate a 9-2 run. The USC transfer led all scorers with 25 points for the Roadrunners. A Danielle Patterson triple stopped the Roadrunners from getting within five. The Johnnies went to the intermission in front, 36-27.
In the third quarter, Reid intercepted a pass, as the Roadrunners tried to get out in transition, she turned up-floor and swung a pass to Everett, who buried the corner three. The triple pushed the St. John's advantage to 47-31, its largest lead of the afternoon.
UTSA refused to go down without a fight as they quick went on a 10-0 scoring run to keep the game in the balance. It was Danielle Cosgrove off the bench, who halted the Roadrunners momentum, recording an assist on an Archer lay-in and made two three-pointers in the closing 51 seconds of the third quarter to make it, 55-43.
Yet again, UTSA strung together a scoring-stretch in the fourth quarter to keep the contest close. A 10-2 Roadrunners run concluded when Bailey collected an offensive board and put it back up to make it 61-53 with three minutes remaining.
Down six, it was Jenkins again that nailed a three-pointer that made it a one possession game and forced a St. John's timeout with 26 seconds on the clock. Reid knocked down a pair of free throws to push the advantage back to five, 67-62.
With 10 seconds to go, Jenkins cut the deficit back to three, 67-64, with a made lay-up. The Roadrunners forced a steal and the forward pulled up for a wide-open game-trying three pointer that rattled of the rim. Archer was fouled on the ensuing rebound and cashed both of her attempts from the charity stripe to solidify the Johnnies second-win at the Las Vegas Invitational.
The Red Storm will open up conference play in Indianapolis when it faces Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2.
