Nine points over the final 1:10 from Bailey lifts the Red Storm
INDIANAPOLIS- St. John's displayed resiliency on Friday night, fending off a late-game Butler run to remain undefeated and start off conference play with a 65-57 victory.
The Bulldogs cut it to just a single point with just 1:30 remaining before veteran Kadaja Bailey took over and closed the game on a solo 9-2 scoring run inside Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Bailey's late-game scoring surge propelled her to a game-high 16 points. The redshirt senior went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, all in the final quarter.
Mimi Reid sunk a career-high three three-pointers en route to an 11-point and season-high seven assist effort in Indianapolis.
For the second straight game, Jillian Archer exceeded her season high in scoring. The forward finished with 13 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting
Rayven Peeples led all players in the rebounding category with 11. The forward added eight points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting effort.
The defense remained stifling as tonight marked the sixth time in seven games the Red Storm held its opponent to 57 points or less.
To start off, the Red Storm orchestrated a 9-0 run early in the first frame, capped off by a turnaround Archer lay-in as the shot clock expired. For the third time this year, Unique Drake made a bucket as the quarter clock ran out to make it 15-7 in favor of St. John's.
In the second quarter, it was Reid's sharpshooting that allowed the Johnnies to hold grasp of a comfortable lead. The graduate student hit a trio of three-pointers, which exceeded her previous career high in just 5:49 of gameplay. St. John's (7-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) held a 32-20 advantage at the halftime break.
In the third stanza, eight straight Butler points by Anna Mortag kept the home side in the contest. Danielle Pattersoncollected an offensive rebound and went back up for a lay-in in the winding seconds of the quarter to make it, 48-36, with 10 minutes remaining.
Butler (4-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) clawed back in the fourth, engineering a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to five, 54-49. The Johnnies responded as Reid slipped a pass to Peeples who finished an off-balance lay-up. The Bulldogs refused to go down quietly as two Rachel McLimore free-throws capped off what resulted in a 13-2 run, trimming the deficit to a single-point, 56-55, with 1:30 left on the clock.
That's when Bailey took over as the team's leading scorer slashed to the rim and finished to swing the momentum back in the Johnnies favor. On the ensuing offensive possession, Bailey converted in the paint once again, this time drawing a foul and completing the old-fashioned three-point play to make it 61-55.
With 12 seconds to go, it was Bailey again who capitalized at the charity stripe to make it 65-57 and lift the Red Storm to a 7-0 start, its best since the 2014-15 campaign.
Following Friday's game, the Johnnies will have a quick turnaround as they welcome no. 13/14 Creighton to Carnesecca Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.
