Undefeated Red Storm ready for conference clash that will air on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y.- The undefeated St. John's women's basketball team returns to the hardwood to face Providence on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
The conference clash will be broadcast nationally on FS1 with John Fanta and Kim Adams on the call from Queens.
Off to an impeccable start, the Red Storm are one of 11 undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division I women's basketball. For the second week in a row, the Johnnies received votes in both national polls and were the top team in the others receiving votes category in the Associated Press poll with 16.
In its last outing against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 11, the squad cruised to its 10th win of the year, 73-52, matching its best start since 2014-15 and the second-best in program history. The defense was lights out forcing the Wildcats to shoot just 25.8 from the floor, the third time the Red Storm have forced an opponent to shoot less than 30 percent from field goal range this season.
Jillian Archer led the charge against the Wildcats posting her second-consecutive double-double, the forward finished with 11 points and a season-high 14 boards during Sunday's win. The Santa Monica, Calif., native was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 12 after averaging 15.0 points and 12.5 rebounds last week.
The forward has broke out as of late reaching double-figures in scoring four times in the last five games and ranks eighth in the BIG EAST with 8.0 boards per game.
Jayla Everett continues to lead the offense averaging a team-high 15.6 points per contest. The redshirt senior has shot 50 percent from the field in each of her last three games and is averaging 17.7 points per outing during that span.
Providence enters Sunday's matchup with a 8-4 record on the year and an 0-2 start to BIG EAST after contests with ranked foes UConn and Villanova. is led by Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Janai Crooms. The senior guard does it all averaging 13.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists.
The series between the two has been closely contested in recent memory. Eight of the last 10 meetings have been decided by seven points or fewer, including two going to overtime. Last season, the two split the series with St. John's pulling out an overtime victory, 68-62, on Feb. 20, 2022. Providence is St. John's second-most frequently played opponent as the league foes will meet for the 77th time. The Red Storm lead 44-32.
Carnesecca Arena will be in the holiday spirit giving out five surprise gifts to lucky fans throughout Sunday's contest.
Following Sunday's tilt, St. John's will face Wagner to conclude its five-game homestand on Dec. 21 at 2 p.m.
