Red Storm move to 11-0, match best start in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team has matched the best start in program history after a dominant fourth quarter sent them past Providence, 63-55.
The Red Storm has reached 11-0 for just the second time ever, matching the program-record start from 2004-05.
The two sides went back and forth throughout the contest before a 17-5 scoring stretch lifted the Red Storm to stay undefeated and moved to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2014-15.
Jayla Everett went off for a season-high 21 points, serving as the catalyst for the Johnnies' offense. The redshirt senior poured in nine in the last nine minutes of regulation to keep the undefeated campaign alive. The sharpshooter drilled a season-high five three-pointers, the most made by a Red Storm player since Qadashah Hoppie hit six against DePaul on Jan. 13, 2021.
Rayven Peeples provided a big lift on the boards, collecting a game-high 14 rebounds. The redshirt senior added eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and matched a season high with four blocks.
Jillian Archer was the other Johnnie to finish in double figures, adding 11 points. The forward has scored 10 or more points in five of her last six appearances.
Everett got her abundant scoring outing started early, the guard buried consecutive triples as part of an 8-0 first quarter run that gave the Red Storm the lead, which it held until late in the third quarter.
Everett hit another three to cap off a 7-0 run midway through second quarter that put St. John's ahead, 25-19.
In the closing stages of the first 20 minutes, the Friars trimmed the deficit to a single point after a back-door cut from Kylee Sheppard led to a lay-in as time expired in the half, 27-26. The sophomore guard led the visitors with a season-high 17 points.
The Red Storm started the second half strong with back-to-back three-pointers from Kadaja Bailey and Everett. The Friars maintained a narrow deficit, staying within one possession for the majority of the third frame. After a basket by Unique Drake led directly to a steal and another lay-in from Mimi Reid, Providence called timeout, down 40-35. The Friars spurred an 8-0 run to end the third quarter, which culminated with a made fadeaway jumper from Nariah Scott as the quarter clock expired, taking a 43-40 lead into the final 10 minutes in Queens.
The Red Storm controlled the fourth quarter as it has all season, scoring the first nine points of the period to reclaim the lead. The Friars fought back, but Everett took over the game in a big way. Ahead by just three points, the St. Louis native buried her fifth triple of the day before hitting a step-back jumper as the shot clock expired. The guard capped off the 8-2 run that sealed the victory by finding Archer for an and-one lay-in with four minutes remaining that made the score line 58-47.
The Red Storm defense denied the visitors to come within seven the rest of the way, sealing its fourth-straight home victory over Providence after outscoring them 23-12 in the final quarter.
The undefeated St. John's squad will face Wagner to conclude its five-game homestand on Dec. 21 at 2 p.m.
