Undefeated Red Storm to face first nationally-ranked opponent of the 2022-23 campaign
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's basketball team welcomes no. 13/14 Creighton to Carnesecca Arena on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
After three games away from the Big Apple, the Red Storm return to Queens for the start of a five-game homestand, its longest stretch of the season.
Jon Yardley and Maren Walseth will have the call of the clash between undefeated squads, which will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
On Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse, St. John's fended off a 13-2 fourth quarter run from Butler to move to 7-0 and start BIG EAST play off with a 65-57 victory. The Bulldogs cut it to just a single point with just 1:30 remaining before veteran Kadaja Bailey took over and closed the game on a solo 9-2 scoring run in Indianapolis. Bailey's late-game scoring surge propelled her to a game-high 16 points, she averages a team-leading 15.3 per game.
Experienced transfers Jillian Archer and Mimi Reid put on strong performances in the conference opener. Reid hit three triples in the second quarter and dished out a game-high seven assists. While Archer set a new season-high in scoring for the second-straight outing, the forward finished with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
The Bluejays reached their highest Associated Press poll ranking in program history this past week, when they leaped to no. 13 after a 7-0 start. Creighton boasts three victories over top-25 opponents. The squad is led by Lauren Jensen, who is currently averaging 17.3 points per game.
In their BIG EAST opener, the Bluejays closed the door with a convincing victory at no. 24 Villanova. Creighton was trailing by 10, 19-9, in the first quarter but rallied back for a convincing, 67-46 conference win.
The current series between is closely contested as St. John's holds a slight 12-11 advantage. The Bluejays have taken the last two meetings and the last Red Storm win came in the 2020 BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal in a 70-54 triumph on March 7.
Following Sunday's meeting, the Johnnies will return to its non-conference schedule when it welcomes Iona on Dec. 8 for a 7 p.m. start from Carnesecca Arena.
