St. John’s Freshmen Shine in Doubleheader Sweep

Four St. John’s newcomers tally wins in victories over St. Francis Brooklyn and Wagner
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2022)- The St. John's men's tennis team held serve in Thursday's doubleheader with a pair over comfortable 4-0 victories over St. Francis Brooklyn and Wagner. Across the two matches, four St. John's freshmen corralled singles victories at the USTA National Tennis Center.
In the first match against St. Francis (N.Y.), freshman Vlad Vasilache recorded his first career collegiate victory. The Otopeni, Romania native swung past the Terriers' Luis Foix Sotos in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Both Carl Gustavsson and Ignacio Garcia bounced back from losses on Sunday, each with 6-2, 6-2 straight set victories this afternoon. The Red Storm outlasted the Terriers in both doubles matches to earn the point and secure a 4-0 win.
In the second half of Thursday's doubleheader, the Johnnies met Wagner on the hard court. St. John's swept the Seahawks 4-0 to advance to 5-1 on the year. Dylan Loru notched his first win of 2022 with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Wagner's Lucas Darling. Freshmen Gustavsson, Ryota Kaneda and Yaron Guberman all recorded wins to blank the Seahawks.
The five-match homestand has drawn to a close as the Red Storm will now hit the road this weekend to face Yale in New Haven, Conn on Saturday at 1 p.m.
