Axel Vila Antuna outlasts no. 102 Michael Sun in New Haven, Conn.
NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The St. John's men's tennis team picked up a quality victory at Yale, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm earned the doubles point before recording four singles victories to add a tally to the win column.
Reigning BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Axel Vila Antuna notched another victory over a nationally ranked opponent on Saturday. The junior claimed a win in straight sets over no. 102 Yale's Michael Sun 7-6, (7-2), 7-6 (7-4).
Freshman Carl Gustavsson and Vlad Vasilache continued their strong week. Vasilache bested the Bulldogs' Luke Neal in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2. Gustavsson battled his way to a three-set victory over Yale's Walker Oberg, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5, on the no. 4 court.
In doubles, the no. 1 team of Vila Antuna and Ignacio Garcia continued its dominance on the right side of a 7-5 decision over Yale's Michael Sun and Arnav Dhingra. Charlie James and Ryota Kaneda gutted out a 7-6 (7-5) to move past the Bulldogs' Theo Dean and Aidan Reilly to tally the doubles point.
The Johnnies will retake the court on Wednesday when it will face neighboring opponent Queens College.
