QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2022) – The St. John's softball program is set to open its season in Auburn, Ala., on Friday at the Tigers Invitational.
The Red Storm will play UMass Lowell at 12 p.m. before taking on Auburn at 5 p.m. The following day, St. John's will face the Riverhawks at 9:30 a.m. before closing the weekend against Auburn at 2:30 p.m. SEC Network+ will provide coverage for the Red Storm's game against Auburn on Friday, while Auburn will provide a radio stream for the games on both Friday and Saturday. All games this weekend will have live stats available on StatBroadcast.
Bob Guerriero is entering his fourth year as head coach of the St. John's Softball team and is assisted by Grace Kramer and Marissa Rizzi. Kramer, a third-year assistant coach is an experienced BIG EAST pitcher who boasted 27 wins, four saves and 380 strikeouts during her four-year career with St. John's. After making 17 appearances during the team's BIG EAST Championship run in 2015, Kramer emerged as a leader in the circle over the next two seasons, appearing in 55 games and earning 24 wins during that span, which included a conference regular season title in 2017. Rizzi, a first-year assistant coach, won two regular season titles with the Johnnies and was named to the All-BIG EAST First team in consecutive seasons, along with nods to the NFCA All-Region team in 2019 and 2021.
This season, the Red Storm will start with two high-profile tournaments: the Auburn Tigers Invitational and the University of South Florida Invitational. Including contests in Alabama and Florida, St. John's will take on 14 non-conference opponents across eight different states.
With four home series against conference opponents, the Johnnies will look to improve upon their BIG EAST preseason ranking. The sixth-place pick is the lowest for St. John's since conference realignment in 2013. That season, the Red Storm was selected to finish eighth in the preseason poll.
St. John's will look to take on its first full season, comprised of 46 games, since 2019. In 2020, the Red Storm was poised for another top finish in the BIG EAST. Coming off a 2019 Regular Season Championship, the program's third in five years, St. John's was picked to finish third in the Preseason Poll. The Red Storm had yet to play a home game and was coming off a stacked non-conference schedule, including trips to No. 1/1 UCLA and No.16/16 Michigan, when the pandemic shut down play. In 2021, rather than competing in tournaments during the non-conference season, the Red Storm played nearby opponents including a 12-3 opening day win against Rhode Island. Despite a 10-21 record, the Red Storm picked up wins against BIG EAST foes Connecticut, Providence, Creighton and Seton Hall.
Of the 19 players on the St. John's roster, 12 of them hail from California. Among the 12 is Hannah Mearns, a transfer from Binghamton University, and freshmen Natalie Casto, Anese Thompson, and London Jarrard. The incoming class is also made up of Fresno State transfer Madison Wallace, New York native Maeve Marra and Carolina Zamudio who hails from Mexico City, Mexico.
The Red Storm is captained by Angela Saric, Kaitlyn Lologo and Peyton Cody. Cody led the squad with 21 RBIs last season. Of the returners, she also led the team in virtually every batting statistic with a .309 batting average, a .564 slugging percentage, 12 runs and 29 hits.
In the pitching circle, St. John's will see both new and old faces. Erin Brown and Saric boast years of St. John's experience while Mearns has a year at Binghamton University under her belt. Zamudio is new to the NCAA stage but will take from her experiences at the Softball Word Championship and Pan-American Games with Mexico's national team. Brown led the Red Storm's pitchers last season with an ERA of 5.08 in 22 appearances.
UMass Lowell will face off against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Saturday before taking on St. John's at 1 p.m. Last season, the Riverhawks went 13-18 and fell to UAlbany, 4-3, in the America East Championship game. In the off-season, UMass Lowell welcomed a new head coach in Jen Starek. Starek was previously the head coach at the University of New Haven, a Division II school. Eight members of the 2021 squad earned spots on the All-America East teams while junior Ryley White was named Rookie of the Year after leading the team with a 1.84 ERA.
The only time the Red Storm have battled the Riverhawks was during opening weekend last year. The two teams split the series, 1-1.
Like the Riverhawks, Auburn will play Seton Hall before taking on the Red Storm. The Tigers are coming off a 2021 season that saw them go 27- 24, before eventually falling in the NCAA Regionals. Sophomore Shelby Lowe is expected to be the standout pitcher for Auburn. Tabbed to the Extra Elite Top 100 List, Lowe appeared in 30 contests with 26 starts as a freshman posting a 1.48 ERA and 13 wins. She also was just the fifth freshman in school history to post over 100 strikeouts in a single season.
St. John's and Auburn have met once before, on Feb. 27, 2016. The Tigers took away the win, 9-0, in just five innings.
