London Jarrard and Anese Thompson record first collegiate hits
Auburn, Ala. (Feb. 11, 2022) – The Red Storm dropped a pair of decisions against UMass Lowell and Auburn to open the 2022 season at the Tiger Invitational on Friday.
Game 1
UMass Lowell pitcher Chelsea Runyon scattered three hits across seven innings of work and struck out 11 batters, as the Red Storm dropped its season opener, 4-0, to the River Hawks.
Freshman London Jarrard led the way for the Red Storm in her collegiate debut, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Classmate Anese Thompson doubled in her first St. John's at-bat to lead off the top of the second.
Binghamton transfer Hannah Mearns was tagged with the loss in her Red Storm debut despite giving up just two earned runs in six innings of work.
After the Red Storm left runners on base in the first and second innings, the River Hawks opened the scoring in bottom of the third. Elizabeth Frederick walked and stole second before coming home on a Becca Vaillancourt single to right. After advancing to third on a double, Vaillancourt scored on a sac fly to right.
The River Hawks added single runs, both of which were unearned, in the fourth and sixth innings.
Game 2
Preseason All-SEC Pick Shelby Lowe tossed an 11-strikeout no-hitter in a 14-0 win for Auburn to close out day one of the Tiger Invitational.
After striking out the St. John's side in the top of the first, Auburn homered twice in a five-run home half to take an early lead.
The Tigers added two more in the second before hanging up another five-spot in the bottom of the third.
St. John's went down in order in the fourth before Auburn added its final two runs of the evening in the home half of the frame.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday when it takes on UMass Lowell at 10:30 a.m. ET followed by Auburn at 3:30 p.m. ET.
