Red Storm men’s basketball team and Bulldogs to tip at 5 p.m. on CBS Sports Network
QUEENS, N.Y. – Less than 48 hours after picking up a road win at Xavier, the St. John's men's basketball team will return to action against Butler at Carnesecca Arena on Friday evening.
The Red Storm and the Bulldogs will tip at 5 p.m. on CBS Sports Network with Tom McCarthy, Pete Gillen and Jon Rothstein on the call. Fans call also catch the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network audio broadcast with John Minko and Tarik Turner on the Varsity Network app, TuneIn Radio, XM Radio channel 381 and channel 971 in SXM app, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app.
Friday night's contest is a rescheduled game, as the Red Storm and the Bulldogs were originally slated to meet on Dec. 23 in Queens before COVID issues forced the postponement of that contest. The game will mark the second meeting between the teams in less than two weeks, as the Johnnies won a back-and-forth battle at Hinkle Fieldhouse, 75-72, on Feb. 5. That win was the first for St. John's in Indianapolis since Jan. 25, 2014, during Butler's first year in the BIG EAST.
St. John's snapped another lengthy road skid on Wednesday, taking down Xavier at Cintas Center for the first time since Feb. 14, 2015.
Julian Champagnie led the way against the Musketeers, who were ranked in the AP Top 25 as recently as last week. The Brooklyn native scored 27 points on 9-of-19 shooting, marking the sixth time this season that the BIG EAST's leading scorer has netted 25 or more.
Three other Johnnies finished in double figures, including 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from Tareq Coburn. The graduate student and former Academic All-American gave the Johnnies the lead for good, erasing a one-point deficit with a personal 7-0 run midway through the second half. The Queens native went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Aaron Wheeler tallied 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and pulled down eight boards, reaching double figures for the 12th time in his last 13 games. Montez Mathis added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Friday will mark the fifth time this season that the Red Storm has played two games in the span of three days. The Johnnies are 4-0 this year in games on one day's rest, including BIG EAST victories against Seton Hall (Jan. 24), Georgetown (Feb. 3) and Butler (Feb. 5).
Butler and St. John's will meet for the 19th time in a series history that dates back to the 1958 NIT at Madison Square Garden. The Bulldogs own a 10-8 edge all-time over the Johnnies, but are just 1-4 in their last five trips to Carnesecca Arena. Last January, Champagnie scored 18 points in a 69-57 St. John's victory on Jan. 12 in Queens to kick start a stretch that saw the Johnnies go 8-2 over their next 10 games.
Butler comes to Queens on the heels of back-to-back wins, taking down then-No. 18 Marquette at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Feb. 12 before dropping DePaul, 73-71, on Tuesday night in Chicago. Butler ended that win over the Blue Demons by making six straight field-goal attempts, including a bank-shot triple from freshman Simas Lukosius with six seconds to play.
Sophomore guard Chuck Harris is Butler's leading scorer this season at 10.8 points per game. Five other Bulldogs average between 8.0 and 9.3 points per game, including Bo Hodges, who scored 22 in his last outing against St. John's.
Butler ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring defense, limiting opponents to just 65.1 points per game. The Bulldogs lead the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense, holding the opposition to a 30.4 percent clip from beyond the arc.
Friday's game will feature a severe contrast of preferred playing styles. St. John's enters the contest ranked fourth nationally in adjusted tempo according to KenPom, averaging 73.9 possessions per game. Butler sits at 341st in the nation in that same category, averaging 63.4 possessions.
After taking on the Bulldogs, St. John's will remain in Queens before welcoming Creighton on Feb. 23. Tip-off for that contest is set for 6:30 p.m. on FS1.
