Red Storm dropped contests against St. Joseph’s and No. 25/25 USF
TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2022) – After claiming a pair of wins on the tournament's opening day, the St. John's softball team (2-6) fell to both Saint Joseph's and No. 25/25 USF on Saturday during the second day of the USF Tournament.
GAME ONE
St. John's jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but could not hold on, as Saint Joseph's rallied for a 7-3 win in the Red Storm's first game of the afternoon.
After recording three hits in yesterday's win over the Hawks, Meisha Murray went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman Anese Thompson extended her hitting streak to three games with a two-RBI single.
In the early going, St. John's carried over the momentum from a successful first day in Tampa, scoring all three of its runs in the first inning. Murray led off the game with a single through the right side before London Jarrard ripped a two-bagger to center field. With a pair of runners in scoring position and no outs, Thompson sent a two-RBI single through the right side. Following a Melanie Santos walk and an Amy Mallah single to load the bases, Natalie Alheidt reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Thompson and put the Johnnies ahead by three after a half-inning.
Saint Joe's scored once in both the second and third innings to make it a one-run game before jumping ahead in the fourth. Kayla Tauber hit a run-scoring triple to right center before coming home on a Jordan Hinkle single in the following at-bat, making it 4-3 Hawks after four. Saint Joe's tacked on three more runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Sarah Cancila and Jessica Gaughan.
Murray laid down a bunt single with one out in the seventh, but could not start a rally, as Saint Joe's held on for a 7-3 win.
GAME TWO
Taking on the no. 25 team in the nation, St. John's stayed within striking distance for most of the contest before a four-run sixth sealed a 6-0 win for South Florida.
Santos singled twice to record two of the Johnnies' three hits. Jarrard added the other base knock against the host Bulls.
USF's starting pitcher, reigning AAC Pitcher of the Year and Third Team All-American Georgina Corrick, struck out 13 Johnnies in 7.0 innings of three-hit work to improve to 7-0 on the season.
The Red Storm recorded singles in each of the first two innings, but proved unable to string together a run-scoring sequence off Corrick.
The Bulls pushed across the game's first run in the bottom of the opening frame, as Alanah Rivera doubled to left center to score Emilee Hanlon.
Josie Foreman led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to make it 2-0 Bulls before USF added on four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a three-run shot off the bat of Madison Epperson.
Santos recorded her second single with two outs in the seventh inning, but ended the game on second base.
St. John's will close out the USF Tournament on Sunday at 3 p.m. in a rematch against the host Bulls.
