St. John’s will play doubleheaders at Florida Atlantic and Florida International
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2022) – The St. John's softball team will continue its spring break trip in Florida with a doubleheader at Florida Atlantic on Tuesday and two contests against Florida International on Wednesday.
The doubleheader against FAU is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start while Wednesday's contests will start at 10 a.m. All four games can be streamed for a fee on ConferenceUSA.com. Live stats will be available on each schools' respective websites.
St. John's went 2-3 at the USF Tournament, notching wins against Fairfield and Saint Joseph's on Friday. In the win against the Stags, Carolina Zamudio tallied 12 strikeouts. Her dozen punch-outs marked the first time a Red Storm student-athlete tallied double-digit strikeouts since Madison Morris fanned 11 on April 6, 2019, at Creighton. London Jarrard, Melanie Santos and Anese Thompson each picked up two hits apiece. Thompson launched her first collegiate homer while Jarrard went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Santos turned in a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
Against Saint Joseph's, Hannah Mearns recorded her first collegiate shutout, scattering just four hits and matching a career-high with nine strikeouts. Jarrard and Meisha Murray both recorded three hits for the Johnnies. Jarrard drove in three runs and scored another while Murray scored three of the team's six runs.
For her efforts, Jarrad was tabbed the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The Carlsbad, Calif., native currently leads the team in batting average at a .357 clip. She also leads the team in hits (10), runs (5), and doubles (2).
Last season, the Owls went 12-35 and did not make the C-USA Tournament. Centerfielder Kaitlyn Cunningham was named to the league's All-Rookie team after posting a .298 batting average and a team-high five triples. This season, Florida Atlantic is 6-9 and went 3-3 last weekend picking up wins against Jacksonville and Michigan State at the FAU "Strikeout Cancer" Tournament.
The Johnnies and the Owls have met 10 times before with FAU owning a 9-1 edge in the series history.
Like the Owls, the Panthers did not make the C-USA Tournament, posting a season record of 14-26. Vanessa Gallegos was named to the NFCA All-Region Second Team after leading the Panthers in batting average (.352), hits (43) and RBIs (33). This season, the Panthers are 8-9 and went 4-2 over the weekend in its host tournament. FIU took down Drexel and Brown, twice.
FIU and St. John's each hold three wins apiece in the series history.
