St. John’s Travels to Xavier for Sunday Showdown

The Johnnies will seek a season sweep of the Musketeers
QUEENS, N.Y (Feb. 5, 2022) – For the second time this week, the St. John's women's basketball team takes on Xavier in a BIG EAST battle, this time, at the Cintas Center on Sunday.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Rich Hoyt and Paul Fritschner on the call.
During their last outing, the Johnnies fell to Villanova, 82-58, at Carnesecca Arena on Friday afternoon. Kadaja Bailey led the Red Storm (7-15, 3-9 BIG EAST) in scoring with 18 points, all of which came in the first half. The Long Beach, N.Y. native shot 7-for-16 from the field and sank 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Camree Clegg scored in double digits for the fifth time this season, as the Westland, Mich. native tallied 11 points against the Wildcats.
This season, St. John's is averaging 73.5 points while shooting 43.8 percent from the field. Leilani Correa leads the squad with 18.3 points per game. Rayven Peeples paces the squad with 9.7 rebounds while Clegg's 3.3 assists per game are a team best.
Xavier enters the contest at 7-14 this year with a 2-10 record against league opponents. The Musketeers have lost three straight, including a 91-86 bout at Seton Hall on Friday. During the 2021-22 campaign, Xavier averages 65.7 points while shooting 40.6 percent from the field. Three Musketeers average double-figure scoring this season with Nia Clark leading the way at 11.7 points per game. Kae Satterfield posts 10.7 points while Aanaya Harris comes in with 10.1 points per contest.
The first meeting this season between the Musketeers and Red Storm ended in an 83-63 victory for the Johnnies this past Wednesday night. All five St. John's starters scored in double figures with Correa leading the way with 20 points. Unique Drake followed closely behind with 15 points during the first win over Xavier. Peeples tallied her third double-double of year with 12 rebounds and 11 points. Bailey and Danielle Patterson rounded out the Johnnies' leading scorers, chipping in 11 points each. For Xavier, Ayanna Townsend posted a team-high 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting. She also added a squad-best eight rebounds.
The triumph over Xavier made head coach Joe Tartamella the all-time winningest coach in St. John's history. With his 177th victory, Tartamella passed his former mentor Kim Barnes Arico to overtake the record. Tartamella spent nine seasons on Barnes Arico's staff, starting as a graduate assistant in 2002 before serving three years as an assistant coach and four seasons as the program's associate head coach.
The Johnnies are 14-2 all-time against Xavier, including 12 straight victories dating back to the 2015-16 season.
