Red Storm welcome local foes St. Francis Brooklyn and Wagner to the USTA National Tennis Center
QUEENS, N.Y. - For the first time this season, the St. John's men's tennis team will compete in a doubleheader against a pair of local foes on Thursday. The Red Storm will open with St. Francis Brooklyn, set to commence at 11 a.m. Following the first contest, the Johnnies will meet Wagner; the first serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at USTA National Tennis Center in Queens.
The Red Storm suffered its first defeat of the spring on Sunday, falling to a stellar Old Dominion, 4-3, and to a 3-1 overall record. Despite the loss, multiple Johnnies were able to tally wins against formidable opponents. Axel Vila Antuna bested Old Dominion's then-no. 64 Francois Le Tellec, 7-6, 7-4, 3-2. Senior Charlie James and junior Giuseppe De Camelis added to the point total with victories over Monarchs in the no. 3 and no. 6 slots.
St. Francis Brooklyn will make the short journey to Queens with a 1-2 record. The Terriers earned their first win over Navy, a 4-3 victory, on Jan. 29. Wagner enters Thursday's match with a 1-4 record, still seeking its first victory over a Division I opponent this season.
The two contests on Thursday will conclude the five-match homestand. The Red Storm will hit the road this weekend to face Yale in New Haven, Conn on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m.
