Johnnies win third-straight with victory over Georgetown
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2022) – The St. John's women's basketball team won its third straight game when the Johnnies topped Georgetown, 79-45, at Carnesecca Arena on Friday night.
The win marked the second 34-point victory in three games with a 26.7-point average margin of victory on the streak.
Four Red Storm (10-15, 6-9 BIG EAST) players finished in double figures, led by Danielle Patterson with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and a pair of 3-pointers. Unique Drake tallied 12 points and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Leilani Correa and Rayven Peeples chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, to close out the Johnnies' double-figure scorers.
The Red Storm was hot from the jump, starting the game on a 7-0 run over the first 2:16. After Georgetown scored coming out of the media timeout, the Johnnies added another 7-0 rally to lead, 18-7, and force the Hoyas (7-14, 2-11 BIG EAST) to burn a timeout with less than a minute to play. A triple from Correa ended the period, putting St. John's ahead, 21-7.
After ending the opening frame on a 10-0 run, the Red Storm extended its scoring streak to 20 to lead, 31-7, with 5:52 remaining in the half. The Red and White impressed on both ends of the floor, holding Georgetown to shooting just 3-of-14 for the period and 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. The Johnnies allowed just seven points for the second straight quarter, and a 3-pointer by Drake as time expired gave the Red Storm the 43-14 edge at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Hoyas outscored St. John's, 9-2, with the lone Red Storm basket during the rally coming at the hands of Peeples with 5:28 remaining in the frame. Still maintaining a sizable advantage, the Johnnies were able to keep the sizable 60-34 lead despite getting outscored 20-17 during the quarter.
During the final 10 minutes, the Red Storm outscored the Hoyas, 19-11. A 9-2 run with a pair of triples from Sara Zabrecky and another from Emma Nolan closed out the Johnnies scoring effort. As a team, St John's held Georgetown scoreless over the final 5:31 and just 2-for-12 from the floor, helping the Johnnies to a 34-point victory.
St. John's dished out 22 assists on 28 made baskets. The Johnnies doubled up the Hoyas on the boards, outrebounding the opposition, 52-26. It was the most rebounds by the team since recording 56 against Delaware State during the 2018-19 campaign.
The 14 points allowed in a half and 45 points in a game were both season lows for St. John's opponents. The Red Storm held the Hoyas to 27.9 percent shooting, which was also a low for the opposition this year.
Up next, the Johnnies welcome Creighton to Carnesecca Arena on Friday, Feb. 18. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
