Softball Set To Open Home Season Against BIG EAST Foe Connecticut

Red Storm will play Huskies at home for first time since 2012
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 10, 2021) – The St. John's softball team will open up BIG EAST play, as well as its home season, with a three-game series against Connecticut.
The Red Storm and Huskies will begin the series with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 12 p.m. before a single game on Sunday at noon. The contests will be streamed on ESPN 3 and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's went 1-3 at the Retriever Round Robin after notching an extra-inning win against Morgan State on Saturday. In the win against Morgan State, London Jarrard logged the lone RBI for the Red Storm, ripping a pinch-hit double to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. The game- winning run came in the bottom of the ninth when Meisha Murray was placed on second to start the inning. The senior stole third and sealed the game when the catcher's throw sailed into left. Melanie Santos, Anese Thompson, and Camryn Steele also tallied hits for the Red Storm. Hannah Mearns picked up the win, her second of the season, twirling 1.1 no-hit frames in relief of Angela Saric, who logged 7.2 innings of one-run work for the Johnnies.
Mearns and Carolina Zamudio lead the Red Storm's pitching staff, tabbing 39.1 and 35.2 innings, respectively. Mearns boasts a team-low 3.56 ERA while Zamudio has recorded 32 strikeouts. Jarrard is the Red Storm's hits leader tabbing 14 hits with a .378 batting average. Murray follows Jarrard with 11 hits and boasts a team-high six runs. The senior has also recorded eight stolen bases on nine attempts.
Last season, the Huskies went 22-20 and advanced all the way to the BIG EAST Championship before falling to Villanova. Connecticut returns reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Jana Sanden. Sanden earned the honor after posting a .393 batting average, good enough for sixth in the BIG EAST. She also tallied a BIG EAST-high 21 RBIs. Heading into the weekend, the Huskies are 9-10 with their most recent wins coming against Penn State by a 7-1 decision and Appalachian State, 7-6. Connecticut is led by Briana Marcelino with a .403 batting average, good enough for third in the BIG EAST. She is also tied for first in the league with 25 hits.
The Huskies and the Red Storm have met 78 times before with Connecticut leading the series 60-18. The last time the two teams met at Red Storm Field was on April 25, 2012, when the Johnnies took away two winning decisions.
