St. John’s Drops Both Contests in Doubleheader Against Connecticut

Red Storm and Huskies set to close series on Sunday at noon
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 11, 2022) – The St. John's softball team (3-16, 0-2 BIG EAST) dropped a pair of decisions against Connecticut in its home opener on Friday.
Game One
A four-run third inning, powered Connecticut to an 8-0 victory in the first contest of this afternoon's twin bill from Red Storm Field.
The first three in the batting order, Meisha Murray, London Jarrard and Peyton Cody all went 1-for-3 at the plate with Jarrard tabbing a double.
Hannah Mearns struck out four batters in 3.2 innings of work.
Lexi Hastings led the charge for the Huskies, the freshman went 3-for-4 in at bats notching three runs and 2 RBI.
Connecticut got out early in the first inning converting two hits into a run, to jump ahead, 1-0. In the bottom of the inning, Jarrard doubled with one out to create an opportunity for the Johnnies. With two on base after an Anese Thompson walk, the Huskies recorded the third out on a fielder's choice and left the runners stranded.
The Huskies pushed their lead open in the top of the third with four hits and four runs. Aziah James started off the frame with a single and was brought home by Hastings. With Hastings on, Reese Guevarra notched a double to bring her home. Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Jana Sanden launched a double into the gap to bring Guevarra across the plate.
The Huskies next two runs came in the top of the fourth, when a Hastings double and an error by the first baseman allowed two runners across home plate. Connecticut tacked on the final run in the sixth inning, to complete the 8-0 score line.
Game Two
A 10-run fifth inning pushed Connecticut to an 11-1 decision in the latter half of Friday's doubleheader.
Murray went 1-for-2 at the plate notching the Red Storm's lone run. Jarrad, Thompson and Amy Mallah all tabbed a hit for the Red Storm.
Both teams remained scoreless until the third inning when Guevarra recorded a homer to the right side to get the Huskies on the board.
In the top of the fifth, Connecticut blew the game open, registering 10 runs on five hits.
Murray singled in the bottom of the fifth and then stole second. She was brought home on a Jarrard single to record the lone Red Storm run.
The Huskies and the Johnnies will compete one final time on Sunday at noon from Red Storm Field.
