St. John’s Impresses at NCAA Northeast Regionals

Fares Ferjani takes gold in the men’s saber competition
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The St. John's fencing teams posted a strong performance at the NCAA Northeast Regionals at Walker Field House on Sunday. The Johnnies faced off against 17 regional schools at the event held at Vassar College.
Fares Ferjani finished at the top of a field of 36 competitors in the men's saber competition. The graduate student won 15 bouts in pool play and emerged from a field of 32 fencers in the elimination round.
Red Storm fencers Andrea Rizzi and Ahmed Ferjani notched a second-place finish in their respective weapon categories. In women's epee, Rizzi collected 16 wins in pool play before advancing to the final in her bracket, where she fell to Harvard's Emily Vermuele. Ahmed Ferjani only finished behind his brother in the saber bracket.
In men's foil, Jan Jurkiewicz logged a third-place finish, emerging from a field of 37 competitors. During the men's epee event, Ivan Zagoruiko narrowly missed the podium and earned a fourth-place finish.
Next up for the Red Storm is the NCAA Championships on March 24-27 in South Bend, Ind. The NCAA Championship qualifying field will be announced on Tuesday, March 15.
