First St. John’s cycle in 15 years capped stellar week for the redshirt sophomore
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following an other-worldly stretch at the plate, St. John's redshirt sophomore Kevin Michaels has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, it was announced this afternoon the league office.
In four games this past week, Michaels hit .722 (13-for-18) with three doubles, a triple and three home runs. The Encinitas, Calif., native drove in 13 runs and scored seven of his own, slugging at a 1.500 clip.
Michaels saved his best performance of the week for last, going 5-for-5 with five RBIs on Sunday and becoming the first Johnnie since Ryan Mahoney in 2007 to hit for the cycle. The shortstop launched a round tripper in the bottom of the sixth to seal the cycle in style.
The day prior, Michaels went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored to help St. John's clinch the series victory over Sacred Heart.
In the series opener on Friday afternoon, the Palomar Community College product became the first Johnnie since David Glancy in 2020 to launch two home runs and drive in six or more runs in a game, going 4-for-5 with a double, two homers, six RBIs and three runs scored in a lopsided St. John's win.
In three games against the Pioneers, Michaels recorded a hit in 12 of his 14 at-bats, hitting at an .857 clip.
Michaels has now notched two weekly honors, earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 21 before being capturing the league's top weekly individual honor on Monday afternoon.
Michaels enters the week on a four-game hitting streak, having singled in a Tuesday loss to LIU at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Red Storm will continue its homestand with a five-game week beginning on Tuesday afternoon against Hofstra at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN3.
