London Jarrard records RBI single for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 30, 2022) –The St. John's softball team topped Stony Brook, 1-0, in a defensive battle on Wednesday afternoon.
The Johnnies' pitching and defensive effort sprung them to a midweek victory at Red Storm Field. A trio of St. John's pitchers Angela Saric, Hannah Mearns and Carolina Zamudio surrendered just four combined hits and no runs. Mearns was credited with the win.
London Jarrard went 1-for-3 at the plate recording the eventual game-winning RBI for the Johnnies in the first inning. Meisha Murray went 2-for-3 to record her fifth multi-hit game of the season. Madison Wallace, Natalie Casto and Natalie Alheidt also tallied singles for the Red Storm.
Seawolves pitcher Shelbi Denman was assigned the loss, after pitching all six innings and recording seven strikeouts for the visitors.
After Stony Brook (14-9) left a runner in scoring position in the first inning, St. John's converted three hits into one run to get the early lead. Murray and Wallace each recorded a single and a stolen base to get on second and third with Jarrard at the plate. The freshman then looped a single into right field that brought Murray home and gave the Johnnies a 1-0 edge.
The Seawolves left runners in scoring position in the second inning before Saric and Mearns combined to retire the next eight batters.
At the start of the sixth, Stony Brook's Catherine Kupinski beamed a ball off the top of the left center field wall to threaten the Johnnies lead. With a runner on third and no outs, Zamudio erased the threat as she struck out the next batter. The ensuing fly-out to centerfield turned into a double play when the Kupinski left early and got St. John's out of the jam.
After a walk put Stony Brook's first batter on base in the top of the seventh, St. Johns retired the next three batters to secure the home victory.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday when it takes on Creighton at 1 p.m. First pitch from Red Storm Field will be broadcasted on FloSports.
