St. John’s Falls to Creighton, 7-1

Natalie Alheidt posts first career home run
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 1, 2022) – The St. John's softball team fell to Creighton, 7-1, on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
Natalie Alheidt went 1-for-3 and recorded her first collegiate home run during the loss. Natalie Casto went 2-for-3 with a double for her first multi-hit game this year.
St. John's (6-24, 1-9 BIG EAST) was the first team to get into scoring position when Casto doubled to center field in the bottom of the second. Melanie Santos advanced the runner on a ground out and Thompson and Anna Freveletti walked to load the bases with two away. Alheidt fouled out to end the inning, and the game remained scoreless heading to the third.
After two walks and a single loaded the bases in the top of the third, Hannah Mearns walked the next batter she faced to bring in a run for Creighton (14-12, 4-4 BIG EAST). Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Emma Rosonke doubled to left field, scoring two to extend the Bluejays 3-0 lead.
Creighton added to its advantage with runs in the following innings to hold the 5-0 edge. Leading off in the bottom of the fifth, Alhedit launched a home run to left center, putting the Johnnies on the board.
Trailing 5-1, St. John's had runners on second and third in the sixth inning when Camryn Steele earned a base on ball and Anese Thompson doubled to right center field. Creighton went to the bullpen for the final two out of the frame, leaving the Red Storm behind by four.
Creighton added to its lead with a two-run homer by Rosonke in the top of the seventh. Down to their final three outs, the Johnnies went down in order to fall to the Bluejays, 7-1.
Mearns fell to 3-11 this season as the sophomore logged her seventh complete game this year. The Santa Monica, Calif., native allowed seven runs on 11 hits while striking out three Bluejay batters.
Kate Mullally earned the win to move to 4-2 this year. The junior pitched 5.1 innings while allowing one run on eight hits and walking three batters. Mikayla Santa Cruz pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief recorded Creighton's lone strikeout of the game.
