Red Storm men’s basketball team meets Golden Eagles at 9 p.m. ET on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will close out the 2021-22 regular season on Saturday, traveling to Milwaukee to take on Marquette.
Tip-off from Fiserv Forum is set for 9 p.m. ET on FS1 with Bob Brainerd and Brian Butch on the call. Fans can also hear the voice of the Johnnies, John Minko, narrate the action on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network available on the Varsity Network app, TuneIn Radio, XM Radio channel 391 and channel 981 in the SXM app, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app.
St. John's (16-13, 8-10 BIG EAST) is locked into the no. 7 seed for next week's BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden and will open postseason action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against either DePaul or Butler. Marquette (18-11, 10-8 BIG EAST) will be seeded either fifth or sixth depending on Saturday's results. The Golden Eagles can secure the no. 5 seed and a bye to the quarterfinals with either a win or a Seton Hall loss to Creighton.
The Red Storm heads to Milwaukee having won three of its last five, including an 81-66 victory over Xavier on Wednesday at Carnesecca Arena to complete a season sweep of the Musketeers. St. John's saw five players finish in double figures, led by a season-high 20 points from graduate student Tareq Coburn. The former Academic All-American at Hofstra connected on six of his eight field goal tries, including a 5-of-7 effort from beyond the arc.
After being tabbed as one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award earlier that day, Julian Champagnie tallied 19 points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals against Xavier. On the season, Champagnie ranks second in the league in both scoring (19.0 ppg) and steals (1.9 spg) and is one of only four players nationwide to average at least 19.0 points and 1.9 steals alongside Washington's Terrell Brown Jr., Vanderbilt's Scotty Pippen Jr. and Arkansas' JD Notae.
Posh Alexander came close to a triple-double in his last outing, finishing with 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Alexander ranks ninth in the league in scoring (14.7 ppg) and second in assists (5.3 apg), one of only two players in the league to place inside the top 10 of both categories alongside UConn's R.J. Cole. Saturday's contest will be the first meeting of the season between the league's top two distributors, as Marquette's Tyler Kolek leads the BIG EAST with 5.7 helpers per contest.
Aaron Wheeler posted his second double-double of the season on Wednesday, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Purdue transfer is averaging 13.4 points per game in conference play.
After missing the previous two games with injury, Joel Soriano scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed five boards in 22 minutes of action.
Despite their game being the last of the regular season for any BIG EAST squad, Saturday night will mark the first meeting of the campaign between the Red Storm and Golden Eagles. The two teams were scheduled to play in Queens on Dec. 29, but COVID issues within the St. John's program forced its cancelation.
St. John's has won two of its last three meetings against Marquette, including a 75-73 victory in Milwaukee on Jan. 31, 2021. The Red Storm is 16-23 all-time against the Golden Eagles in a series dating back to 1960.
Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Shaka Smart, Marquette is led offensively by Justin Lewis, who ranks third in the league at 16.8 points per game, and pulls down a team-high 8.0 boards per contest.
Darryl Morsell, the 2021 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year at Maryland, averages 13.1 points per game for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette has won each of its last seven home games, last falling in Milwaukee on New Year's Day against Creighton. St. John's is no stranger to snapping winning streaks at Fiserv Forum, becoming the first road team to ever defeat Marquette in the building on Feb. 5, 2019, and ending a 14-game home unbeaten streak.
