Red Storm takes down Morgan State, 2-1, in extra innings
BALTIMORE (March 6, 2022) – The St. John's softball team split a pair of decisions on the second day of the Retriever Round Robin, defeating Morgan State, 2-1, before falling to host UMBC, 3-0.
Game One
After tying the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Red Storm walked off Morgan State, 2-1, in nine innings to pick up its first win of the weekend.
London Jarrard logged the lone RBI for the Red Storm, ripping a pinch-hit double to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Melanie Santos, Anese Thompson, and Camryn Steele also tallied hits for the Red Storm.
Hannah Mearns picked up the win, her second of the season, twirling 1.1 no-hit frames in relief of Angela Saric, who logged 7.2 innings of one-run work for the Johnnies.
Morgan State struck first in the top of the fifth, as Mia Ewell reached on a field's choice and stole second before scoring on a double from her sister, Aliya.
After leaving runners on base in the fifth and six, the Red Storm extended the game in the bottom of the seventh. Madison Wallace entered as a pinch runner for Thompson before advancing to second on an Amy Mallah sac bunt. With the runner now in scoring position, Jarrard stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter laced the game-tying double to left center.
Saric stranded a pair of Morgan State runners in both the eighth and ninth innings before the Red Storm ended it in the home half of the frame. Placed on second to start the inning, Meisha Murray stole third and sealed the game when the catcher's throw sailed into left.
Game Two
A day after fanning 17 St. John's batters in a Saturday win, Kya Matter punched out 11 Johnnies in 5.0 innings of two-hit work on Sunday, leading UMBC to a 3-0 win.
Courtney Coppersmith retired six of the seven batters she faced, four by strikeout, to record the save. The York, Pa., native also drove in the game-winning run.
Mallah went 1-for-3 with a double while Murray notched a single.
Carolina Zamudio allowed just one earned run and fanned seven batters across 6.0 frames of action.
Three hits in the bottom of the fifth produced the first of the Retrievers' runs. With runners on first and second following a pair of early singles, Coppersmith slapped an RBI double to left to put UMBC up 1-0.
UMBCs added two unearned insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on the corners after a two-out error, a Karly Keating double brought Logan Hawker and Sierra Pierce home to make it a 3-0 game.
St. John's will open a three-game home series against BIG EAST foe Connecticut on Friday at 1 p.m. All three contests will be broadcast on ESPN3.
