Red Storm to face Villanova in quarterfinal round on Friday
QUEENS N.Y.- The St. John's men's tennis team earned the top-seed heading into this week's BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP. The tournament will be held in Cayce, S.C. from April 21-24.
The Red Storm's will face eighth-seeded Villanova in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 9 a.m. from the Cayce Fitness and Tennis Center. The regular season match-up between the two squads scheduled for March 30 was canceled due to weather concerns.
The seed was determined by the BIG EAST tennis championships and coaches' advisory committee. The committee examined each team's regular-season schedule, ITA rankings, results against conference and common non-conference opponents and record against ranked teams.
The Johnnies concluded the regular season with a 15-5 record and won both of its conference contests over Marquette and Georgetown. The regular-season resume included wins over Boston College, Yale and Delaware. Three out of the five St. John's losses came against ranked opponents.
Axel Vila Antuna and Ignacio Garcia have led the charge for St. John's during the 2022 campaign. The duo has earned four BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honors, as they have compiled 12 wins solely competing on the no. 1 court.
Talented freshman Vlad Vasilache and Carl Gustavsson each have 11 singles wins on the year. The pair trails only Garcia, who has logged 12, for the team-lead in that category.
The Johnnies will look to earn its second title in the last three tries in Cayce, S.C. Last year, DePaul edged the Red Storm, 4-3, in the championship match. In 2019, St. John's held the no. 1-seed and went on to win its fourth BIG EAST crown in seven years.
