Johnnies hold the top-seed heading into conference tournament
CAYCE, S.C.- The St. John's men's tennis squad will begin its quest for its second BIG EAST Championship in the last three years on Friday morning, when they meet Villanova at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Red Storm will face the eighth-seeded Wildcats in the quarterfinal round, beginning at 9 a.m.
"The guys are really looking forward to this," Head Coach Dillon Pottish said. "We've been working hard all year for the BIG EAST Championships, so hopefully we bring the title back to New York City."
The Johnnies concluded the regular season with a 15-5 record and won both of their conference contests over Marquette and Georgetown. The team's regular-season resume included wins over Boston College, Yale and Delaware. Three out of the five St. John's losses came against ranked opponents.
Villanova enters the competition with a 3-14 record on the season. The two programs were expected meet in Pennsylvania on March 30, but the match was canceled due to inclement weather. The last time the programs faced off in the conference tournament was in 2017. The Red Storm defeated the Wildcats, 4-2, in the consolation bracket.
St. John's has enjoyed a great deal of recent success in the BIG EAST Championships, taking the crown in four out of the last eight tournaments. In 2019, the Johnnies rallied by back from down 3-0, to edge Marquette, 4-3. From 2014-16, the Red Storm became just the fourth program in BIG EAST history to win three consecutive conference titles.
Following Friday's opening round, the semifinals of the tournament are slated to begin at 9 a.m. the following day. Sunday's title match will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports, beginning at 9 a.m. For more information on the 2022 BIG EAST Tennis Championships, please visit the conference's website.
