Johnnies move to Saturday’s semifinal round
CAYCE S.C.- In the quarterfinal round of the 2022 BIG EAST Championships, the St. John's men's tennis team made quick work of eighth-seeded Villanova on Friday. The Red Storm swept the Wildcats, 4-0, on a sunny morning at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
The top-seeded Johnnies will now advance to the semifinal round to face the winner of Butler and Georgetown.
After battling its way to the doubles point, the Red Storm corralled three singles victories in consecutive sets to register the tournament victory.
In doubles competition, St. John's trusty duo of Axel Vila Antuna and Ignacio Garcia notched a 6-2 win over Villanova's Matthew Jones and Justin Saurez. On the no. 3 court, the Wildcats logged a 6-3 win to pull even. In the rubber match, Dylan Loru and Charlies James were locked 3-3 in a showdown with Trey Fourticq and Anthony Prokurat. The Johnnies veteran duo strung together three straight games to give them a point advantage.
In singles play, three Red Storm players tallied straight set victories while three others were leading when the matches were deemed unfinished.
Garcia recorded his team-leading 13th singles win of the season in decisive fashion. The 2021 All-BIG EAST First Team selection cruised past Villanova's Jones, 6-1, 6-1.
A pair of St. John's freshman, Vasilache and Ryota Kaneda tallied the remaining two points for the top-seed. Vasilache defeated Ryan Nguyen, 6-0, 6-1 and Kaneda dominated Alex Kim, 6-0, 6-1.
Saturday's semifinal action is set to begin at 9 a.m. from the Palmetto State. Live results are available here.
